I was thinking about a 1500 point list that would include Berzerker squads moving in rhinos with a unit of Raptors outfitted with 2 melta guns coming up behind. I was wondering if it would be possible to effectively use these units in tandem, having the rhinos move towards a transport and disembark while the raptors jump over and blow it up with their meltas so the zerks could assault the squishy things inside on the next turn.

The problem is raptor squads are quite expensive for what you get and this would make my list very specialized, basically having to attack one unit at a time. What are your thoughts?

It is certainly a very viable tactic although you don't really need raptors, just something to trash mech. Which all lists need anyway, but raptors work just fine if used right. But I wouldn't rely solely on them for tankhunting just as I wouldn't rely solely on zerkers as my troops.

But your tactical implication of the 2 units is sound.

Btw, I love your name.

A Daemon Prince could also do some sound vehicle-trashing. One tactic I have seen in higher-point games is having a personal Icon inside one of your transports. As they near the target, Deep-strike some Obliterators within 6 inches of the vehicle with the icon, preventing scatter.

Oblits pop target transport open, troops come out, get charged by zerkers.

I like the Raptor popping Tanks and Zerkers charging the insides. Just make sure your Raptors charge the tanks contents as well, so there locked in Combat or consilidate behind the Zerkers for cover. Hell use the Raptors by themselves to wipe out small man teams in Razorbacks or what not, and let the Zerkers move to hold Objectives.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've only recently started playing this new army that's built around berzerkers so I'm just starting to find new ways to ensure they reach their full potential in assault. I think I'll try out all of these suggestions.

I like your raptor idea. Personally I don't see them enough and it's a shame. I really like them. But I'm not sure if this is cheaper or more effective or any of that jazz but a small unit of chosen in a rhino with at least 2 meltaguns. They ca nstay in the transport pop tanks from relative safety and then let the zerkers attack. I personally prefer the rapot idea but I've seen that set up much more often.

Yeah I've heard a lot of good things about that set up as well. I think it might be slightly cheaper if you only pay for the two meltas (some people have told me to load up all 5 with meltas) but I too like the idea of raptors. I've never played an army with jump pack troops before and it seems like a fun way to do it.

I personally rate Raptors very highly. People say they're expensive, but they cost less points per model than any of the Cult Marines bar Noise Marines and move 12" a turn. They cost a bit more than Loyalist equivalents, but only Blood Angels are able to give their jump infantry melta weaponry. Also since Raptors can take an Icon you can kit them out to fight how you want. They can either hit fast with the Icon of Slaanesh or hit hard with the Icon of Khorne. Either one compliments a unit of Berserkers nicely. If you're worried that the Raptors will get blown off the battlefield early on, consider the Icon of Nurgle despite its heavy point cost.
