Okay, here we go again, I guess :eek:k:. Remember to reply this time, it makes me feel unwanted :p.

Fulgrim: Graham Mcneill

It is the 31st millennium, and humanity is at the peak of its powers. As the Great Crusade, led by Warmaster Horus, continues to conquer the galaxy, Fulgrim, Primarch of the Emperor's Children, leads his warriors into battle against a vile alien foe. From the blood of this campaign are sown the seeds that will lead this proud legion to treachery, taking them down the darkest paths of corruption. Leading up to the carnage of the Dropsite Massacre on Isstvan V, Graham Mcneill tells the tale of Fulgrim's tragic fall from grace in the next thrilling novel in the Horus Heresy series!

Having recived this on friday, I spent the weekend reading the fifth installment in the Horus Heresy series featuring the Emperor's Children, written by Graham Mcneill, responsible for False Gods and the stories about the Ultramarines Fourth. We see what happens to Lucius and Tarvitz and Lord Commander Eidolon, before the events in the previous stories, and also introduces some new charachters, such as rembrancers, but most notably Captain Dementer, and of course gives Fulgrim a major starring role, who is battling with a Daemon inside his head.

The Iron Hands and their Primarch, Ferrus Manus are introduced to the Horus Heresy in this novel, and Fabius Bile plays a part in enhancing Eidolon's geneseed. This also weaves an epic tale of tragic betrayal and awesome battles, along with the odd slow part with the Rembrancers so we can catch our breaths.

Until I read this book, I wasn't a fan of the Emperor's Children, but now I am, but I still prefer the pre-Heresy Marines to the Slaneesh supporting traitors.

If you haven't read this book yet, I reccommend that you do. It's an excellent novel, and the second book by Graham Mcneill that I've read. Hope you enjoy it!

High Point: The talk between Fulgrim and Ferrus Manus where Fulgrim tries to turn his brother to the ways of Horus (I was about to say dark side, but then again, I did watch Star Wars recently), and also the bit between Lucius and Captain Dementer towards the end.

Low Point: I found it hard to get into at the beginning, having constantly to refer to the guide at the beginning known as Dramatis Personae.

The Rating: 9/10

In other news, I picked up Fallen Angels and the Ultramarines Omnibus, so I have plenty of books to read over the summer, and also, if you want reviews sooner, I suggest you follow Of Books and Wargames 2, my blog, for more information. Hope you enjoyed.

A good review. Those were quite good points but my favourite parts are Fulgrim and the Emperor's Children fighting the Eldar, the Wraithlord slaying three Phoenix Guard was excellent. And of course the Istvaan massacre when the supposed loyalists open fire and the true loyalists are rushed by the combined might of seven Traitor Legions .

Blasphemy! Kill the unbeliver! :).

Nah, I Kid, but thanks for the comments. Yeah, I found the Eldar bit superb. At first I saw Eldar in the Dramatis Personae and I was like What the Fuck? Why Are Eldar in here?

Then I realised. Thanks for the reps, bobss.

No problem, I like your reviewing style: Its succinct but concise, perfect, in my opinion for those who wish to pick up said book, but without knowing every single ounce of it, like my own tell:victory:

But yes, I adored the Eldar in Fulgrim, but especially how Fulgrim fighting the Avatar of Khaine was the perfect microcosm of Slaanesh clashing against the Eldar God Khaine. That said, I wasn`t that keen on how barely half a dozen Astartes slaughtered entire waves of Aspect Warriors:p

Excellent review, and I'm going to have to agree with LotN as to my favourite scenes...

The hand to hand with Fulgrim and the Avatar of Khaine was epic, to say the least

Nice review! +rep

I do have to disagree with you on the high point though, for me, though it pains me to say it....I agree with bobss, Fulgrim beating an Avatar to death with his hands? Yes please!
Or the Ferrus vs Fulgrim bit.

True but remember. It was Lucius who did most of the killing, and Lucius is the best swordsman in 30k and 40k.

Am I the only person here who utterly loved the last 100 pages of Fulgrim?

The campaign against the Laer Xenos, the climax with Fulgrim and his Termiantor`s crashing into the Slaaneshi Temple, to stumble upon what I believe is a Laer orgy, and other perverse radiances was the perfect start, the clash against the Eldar was highly interesting, proving the extent to which Fulgrim had already fallen, but the Dropsite Massacre. Seriously. Roughly 40 pages of utter carnage. A hundred thousand Adeptus Astartes hacking each other apart in a beserk fray. Ferrus Manus and the Morlock Terminators erupting out of a massive Drop-Pod assault into Horus` lines, the Iron Warrior`s treachery.... brilliant... that is by far the high point for me :)

Definitely not bobss .

The Istvaan massacre was amazing. The Astartes tearing each other apart while the Primarchs hack their way through all attackers. Horus, Angron and Mortarion were excellent in the finale, especially Horus's discovery of the Daemon-Fulgrim. And the betrayal by the false loyalists was amazing, a single flare to rain death from above.

Nope, I also loved that bit, although it missed out on the High point for the Fulgrim/Ferrus talks and the Lucius/Dementer bit. Next review will be Descent of Angels.

Also, thanks for the rep, Captain Stillios :).

Ehh I thought Descent of Angels was ok, but this is Horus Heresy and ok is not acceptable. They must all be great, titans among books.

Highly true. The Horus Heresy is the zenith of Black Library`s works, the manifestation of the collected pinnacle of their greastest authors. Descent of Angels dosen`t fit in; its not the concept, for that is interesting, to an extent, just executed poorly.

However Battle for the Abyss is not a Horus Heresy book, it just isnt, its some Ultrasmurfs fighting some wordbearers for a few hundred pages. Worst HH book by far.

The best three Horus Heresy novels are in order. A Thousand Sons, Nemesis, Fulgrim. Oh and Bane, i'd recommend buying A Thousand Sons and Nemesis as soon as possible, you may still be able to get them both in gold.

A Thousand Sons is the best HH book I have read by a long shot, only Fulgrim comes near it for me and Ive read all of them except the Dark Angels ones.
