Hello all!

After a 5 year gaming hiatus, I am deciding to continue the Warhammer hobby. I used to play orc(k)s in both Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40k. I have several questions, and I apologize in advance if these questions should be written elsewhere; this is the first time I have posted on these forums.

First, I truly cannot decide between playing Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40k; I truly love both for different reasons. From Fantasy, I love Lizardmen, and from 40k, Astra Militarum have caught my attention. I would truly absolutely love to play both armies, but school is extremely demanding, and I do not have the time or money to play both. However, I am leaning toward 40k, as it appears that Fantasy is a dying IP and that very few players play this. Is this a misguided belief?

Second, with regard to Astra Militarum: the basic infantry look great! However, it seems to me that the Astra Militarum possess extremely little in its breadth of aesthetics. What I mean is that it appears that there really only appears to be one type of model (the gaurdsman), unlike, say the tau, who have fire warriors, kroot, and vespids (completely varied aesthetics throughout the different model types). Is there any way to vary the aesthetics of the Astra Militarum to make it a little less monotonous?

Third, is there an aesthetic difference between normal imperial guardsmen and veteran imperial guardsmen?

Fourth, how is the Astra Militarum supposed to survive close combat? Whilst playing this army, are you supposed to avoid close combat at all costs by retreating and retreating?

Fifth, are the Tempestus Scions and Imperial Knights part of the Astra Militarum codex? (I.e., can you field such units together?)

Sixth, I really want to make a paint scheme with dark blue armor and blue-grey cloth. I am not familiar with the new Citadel paint range, could someone please suggest a decent sample paint scheme following these guide lines?

Seventh, where is the cheapest and best place I can buy Warhammer products?

Finally, is there a different glue that I could use instead of the standard Citadel glue? I really do not believe the odor from this glue is not healthy; are there any milder scented glues on the market that are suitable for Warhammer?

Welcome back to the hobby, and welcome the Heresy!

First, I truly cannot decide between playing Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40k; I truly love both for different reasons. I would say that it is very regional, I would check out the local game stores or wherever you would be playing before making a unilateral decision. While at my FLGS 40k would be the game to get into out of those two choices, I know of other stores where Fantasy has a strong following and 40k is practically dead.

By default? no. You can always use different "types" of guardsmen for different units, for example Catachans could be your regular platoon minions (or at the worst your conscripts), and use Moridians(?) as your vets/storm troopers (Scions) or one of the many other different GW guardsmen models.

Out of the GW models available, I would stick with Cadian and Catachan, since they are plastic, not "Direct Order" only, and not FW.

Third, is there an aesthetic difference between normal imperial guardsmen and veteran imperial guardsmen?

Again, by default "No." See above. There are also the Scions.

Fourth, how is the Astra Militarum supposed to survive close combat? Whilst playing this army, are you supposed to avoid close combat at all costs by retreating and retreating?

It doesn't (At least not against Marine style units, either you will need support units (Commisars, priests, etc) as well as upgrades (Power Axes for example) or simply pray for the best.

Fifth, are the Tempestus Scions and Imperial Knights part of the Astra Militarum codex? (I.e., can you field such units together?)

No, They are not a part of the same codex. However, unless I am incorrect, you can have the scions be an ally and use the imperial knight as your Lord of War all in the same list.

Sixth, I really want to make a paint scheme with dark blue armor and blue-grey cloth. I am not familiar with the new Citadel paint range, could someone please suggest a decent sample paint scheme following these guide lines?

I'll pass here, since I stopped buying GW paints.

Seventh, where is the cheapest and best place I can buy Warhammer products?

Either the Internet (not at GW) or a FLGS, if possible I recommend the FLGS if you plan to play there.

Finally, is there a different glue that I could use instead of the standard Citadel glue? I really do not believe the odor from this glue is not healthy; are there any milder scented glues on the market that are suitable for Warhammer?

Any generic super glue (Or plastic glue if you prefer) would do fine, usually generics are half as much as the GW brand for the amount you get.
