Im considering using a special charachter in my T'au army and Aun'va is looking pretty good. has anyone used him as a kamakazi to get the bonuses for the warriors? ie the extra initiative, strength, hitting on 3+ etc is the morale check worth it to make the firewarriors reasonable in cc?

etherial caste are a waste of points and HQ slots IMO, aside from the BS4 fire warrior squad, they're worthless. Sadly Tau got really ripped off in the 'Cool IC' department

As mentionned, if you really want to use a special character, go for O'shova. He is absurdly strong and tough to kill. Just don't expect you opponent to want to play you again.

Considering that cc is the absolute last place you want to be with anything in the Tau list, no he is not worth the points. Nor is any Ethereal for that matter. Farsight and Shadowsun are badass with Shadowsun being a seriously bitchin model as well but Ethereals are completely wasted points.

Shadowsun is a cool model, but not a great unit. For a start, burst cannons are a better choice for stealth suit weapons, but if you're going to give her short ranged meltas, then why not drop the useless deones? All they've done is made it so she can be shot to pieces as soon as she gets into melta range (since that close the stealth field is useless)

If she were alone, without the drones she;d be an IC rather than a unit and could use another stealth team as a screen to keep her alive long enough to use those guns.

I've always thought that the suicide ethereal was a really bad idea. The points you spend on him can go into another Commander instead, which will do a fair bit more damage than Tau hitting on 3's in close combat. Trying to improve Tau in close combat just seems to fit the saying, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink." They're just not built for it, and losing the Ethereal provokes them into dangerous situations for the army. If I see an Ethereal, I make a beeline for him with my assault units. People get tempted to try to go toe-to-toe in combat with...well... anyone... when the Ethereal is down, and it's just a bad idea, even with the Favored Enemy bonus.

A suicide etherial is a dreadfull idea. Paying points to make your guys better in CC just isn't sensible and the damage it does in morale tests is unacceptable.

Any time you have to pick between a sometimes-useful trick and a big gun, always pick the big gun. My preference for characters is to buy them guns and little else. They don't need drones, shields, iridium armour or any of that junk because they are JSJing ICs. They really shouldn't get shot.

It's wrong to ignore close combat altogether as a tau player. You can use it in the right situation, but only when you are certain it will work, or desperate.
