A question about Chariots

I'm about to integrate two Lion Chariots into my High Elf list and I was wondering how exactly chariots work. I know they get Impact Hits when and if they charge, but after that the crew and mounts fight in melee combat normally, right?

So lets take the Lion Chariot for example. It's drawn by two war lions, but in the stat grid in the unit list entry, it says "war lions" with X attacks. So is that X attacks for the total group of lions or is that X attacks for each one?

No, it's per white lion, as in a normal unit. For example, a normal unit has 10 spearmen in, that means you make 10 spearmen attacks (frontage permissing, of course). The Lion Chariots lists it as 2 White Lions, hence the two White Lions have their attacks apiece. The Pussy Wagon is nice little addition.

Impact hits are resolved at the start of the combat phase (if the chariot charged that turn) before anything else. After that the fight happens as normal with the chariot behaving in the same way as any other unit more or less. The creature pulling the chariot only gets to fight enemies to the front due to the harness of the chariot, but the crew can fight all round.

The stat lines given are per elf or per lion, in the same way as the stats for other unit types are per creature. The chariot is treated as a single model when taking damage so they normally have a wound per crew and creature (normally 4) and a standard toughness and armour save. Any hit is rolled against this chariot pool and the model is only removed when all the wounds are lost. The thing to remember with chariots is the charge is all important, without it the chariot will almost always be destroyed.

Mmm, Lion Chariots / Pussy Wagons.

These guys are fantastic, Galus. I'm sure you'll love them. Just imagine them hitting a flank while your White Lions stubbornly hold a front...

Tiranoc Chariots are the weaker, but just as dangerous, relatives. They do get to shoot and are no slouches on a charge, plus they're much cheaper. Still, if you need hitting power, Lion Chariots are the way to go.

Off topic, I know. But I figured I'd at least toss in my two cents.

Correcto-o-mundo, CG. Just remember that the Lions don't benefit from Speed of Asuryan.

At 2250, you may want no more than two Lion Chariots. Or, you could go for two or three Tiranoc Chariots, if you want a Chariot or Tiranoc themed army.

Really, though, Chariots in general tend to be supporting units. So you only want enough of them to aid the other units of your army. Of course, there's nothing saying that three or four chariots charging into a single unit won't do as much damage as two whole units hitting a flank and front...

What I want to try is a list of solely Spear Elves, Archers, and Tiranoc Chariots with some RBTs. I think that would be fun as all get-out!

I started out wanting a Caledorian army...lots of Dragon Princes and...Dragons, lol. When I realized that Dragon Princes were $50 for 5, I shied away from that idea, although they are probably more worth their $50 than 5 terminators.

Now I'm leaning towards a Chracian army, with lots of White Lions and Lion Chariots. Maybe some arches here and there to piss off my enemy's meat shield.

I love Chracian themed armies! The best one I saw took the Lions from a bunch of chariot sets and mounted their dragon princes on them. It was absolutly gorgeous!

BTW: Yes, Dragon Princes are well worth the cost and the points. Don't forget that even at $50.00 you would only get ten white lions. Small units like that are a laugh for any army with a ranged option. Princes, on the other hand, have the armor to stand up to it. They also make Tzeenitchian armies cry due to their immunity to fire.

Damn evil things these lion chariots... played a 1500pt game vs HE the other day and faced 2 of them- 1 ran through a couple of my units. Funnily though I killed the other in the first turn (3 wounds from my hunter's harpoon launcher was a nice start) which then caused his RBT's crew to run from the table.

Lion Chariots are nasty on the charge but not so bad off it. They cause fear so sometimes an enemy will fail to assault and then get charged and even if you get into combat with them they still have enough high S attacks to make most people wince.
