Greetings,

Im just coming back to 40k after a couple of years absence and have decided to build up a Guard Army. The 4th Praetorian Rifles in fact - the building of this army is being documented in a different thread in the appropriate section of the forum.

However It would be good to get some feedback on my list and some assistance with where to go next. My plan is to build this army in 500 point segments. As such the below encompasses all of the miniatures I have thus far - which i know doesn't give me much options to customise depending on opponent.

So the first 500 points, which will form the core of my army goes like this

Company command Squad with Carapace Armour

Infantry Platoon # 1
2 x 10 man infantry squads each with a Grenade Launcher.
Attached Heavy Weapon Squad; Auto Cannons

Infantry Platoon # 2
2 x 10 man infantry squads each with a Grenade Launcher.
Attached Heavy Weapon Squad; Heavy Bolters.

This comes in at 499pts.

Thoughts?

I always like doing something along this line, building up in 250, 350, or 500 point segments. Makes you have to think that much harder about your selections and unit roles.

I'm going to stop here and tell you that this list is not legal in its current format. Your infantry squads need to have, at a minimum, two infantry squads and one platoon command squad. So while your two infantry platoons both have the required number of infantry squads, neither one has a platoon command squad.

Of course thats if you did not include them, a quick glance at the points used in this list does not show you using 499. It should actually come out to 440.

Given that these are the models you have, here what I would suggest:

Company command squad
Autocannon
70

Infantry platoon
Platoon command squad

Infantry squad
Grenade launcher, autocannon
65

Infantry squad
Grenade launcher, autocannon
65

Heavy weapon squad
3x Heavy bolter
75

Veteran squad
Grenadiers, 2x grenade launcher
85

Total: 360/500

This leaves you with 6 lasgun guardsmen and a lot of points left to work with. Which I would honestly use to get two meltaguns, a heavy flamer, and a chimera for the veterans (+75 points), give the the company and platoon command squad one each of those two grenade launchers, and an autocannon and chimera for the platoon command squad (+65 points). You could also give that second chimera to the company command squad if you want to.

That gets you to 500 points even, adds two vehicles while only removing six infantry to your current force, and gives you tougher threats all around.

Thanks for reply. It's my bad but each platoon has a command squad included in the 499.

I like the look of your list though, better than mine, so shall look at that in more depth when (and if) I ever get home from work!

Haha, I hear you about that; feels like work just drags some days.

Even with the platoon command squads you shouldn't be at 499, but rather an even 500.

Do you have any thoughts for what you want at 1k?

I've used Battlescribe so I guess that could be out but each platoon is 215 plus 69 for the command squad giving 499.

For my next 500 pts I guess it's time to add armour. I haven't given in too much though but I don't think I could go wrong with Leman Russ tanks. Also I like the look of the Manticore. However I don't really know how that will play out on the gaming table.

You can get a better feel for the theme of my army in the projects section titled 4th Praetorian Rifles. My plan is to be infantry heavy with armoured support

I use battlescribe quite often myself, generally have no issues with it.

but each platoon is 215
Now knowing that both infantry platoons have command squads, that number makes sense.

plus 69 for the command squad giving 499.
This one, however, does not. The company commander needs to get his carapace armour from the armoury, and that costs him roughly a guardsmen in points. Carapace for the rest of the veterans should run you almost double that cost. Those whole unit should be running you 73 points in its current format.

For my next 500 pts I guess it's time to add armour. I haven't given in too much though but I don't think I could go wrong with Leman Russ tanks.
You can't go wrong with armoured support, even more so with russ's. All things considered I would definitely recommend you look into the normal russ as an overall workhorse, exterminators and punishers for infantry support, and the demolisher as a heavy hitter.

Also I like the look of the Manticore. However I don't really know how that will play out on the gaming table.
I've heard the manticore is terrible for its points, and your much better off getting a trio of wyverns for the same points.

Overall, for your next 500 pointd I would recommend considering something like:

Infantry squad
Grenade launcher and autocannon
65

Leman russ
Heavy bolter sponsons
170

Hydra battery
2x Hydra
150

Hellhound
125

510 (remove autocannon from platoon command squad)

You're right of course. Having re-chevked the command squad have carapace except the commander.
To be honest I wasn't fussed for it but had a small number of points spare. I couldn't get in a box so just threw in the carapace
It's all academic now though as I like your 500 point suggestion more and will probably look to build that as my core base

The other thing that occurs to me is that isn't my mobility hampered by having the HW in with each squad rather than as a separate entity?
