Ok I was just thinking, and I hope I start something here... What should happen next to the IoM?

I would love to see the forces of chaos invade terra again forcing the emperor to awaken in some form of super dreadnought... If terra was to fall to the forces of chaos then maybe some of the missing primarchs would return to aid IoM in retaking it.

What would you like to see in the future, apart from only war?

The Emperor dying would decide it all. Him ascending could send humaity into a golden age and swiping everything away. Him simply dying and the Warp would swallow everything, just read the fifth edition rulebook. That's why the non-gamblers keeps it status quo. It's a pretty damn big what if? :)

Yea but thats what makes it so interesting. What if the emperor died... hear me out

Correct me if I am wrong but the emperor was create from shamans or psykers of the first men. The 40k universe if full of psykers, what if the final battle involved the physic energy from the emperor and remaining (now found primarchs) created a new host who was cast away and hidden. So Chaos think they have won, terra has fallen but there is a new hope, the warp does not consume all because there are still strong psykers loyal to the IoM... Very star wars esque maybe haha

But i suppose the end of the IoM could end anyway, nids could consume the galaxy, Orks could band together and storm Terra etc.

I'm just curious if people have thought of an alternate future to 40k where the IoM isn't at the centre of it all

The story line up till the 13th black crusade is it my gent.

All the focus is currently on Horus Heresy and all matter of lore and money making opportunities to explore there without venturing into anywhere after the 13th crusade.

It's like the U.S. today, we have just stagnated and aren't really progressing as so much on expanding on old ideas remade fresh.

Agree, to much focus is on the Horus Heresy, you would of thought Chaos would of tried something by now, they out number the space marine chapters now... I think

They could just stroll into terra now, that would be a very boring story though.

There's a reason it's Warhammer 40K, and not Warhammer 41K. The year is right on the eve of 42nd miliennium; what they're trying to say is "here's the setting, now play the game to decide YOUR future for it".

As for too much focus on the Heresy? Eh, it's the reason 40K actually exists. The Chaos Gods are happy with how things are. They don't want the IoM vanquished, it produces too many emotions for them to say *nahh*. Thy've got what they wanted; the IoM stagnant.

It is of course an allegory and sly piss take on the governments in the UK and US etc.

As for money making? Eh, it works, and it's actually a decent storyline. Compare that to 40K novels where everything is about complete unknown characters, who matter nothing, whether they're Space Marine Chapter Masters, or Titan Princeps.

Compare that 30K which is so little fleshed out, that literally anything can advance the storyline; and those which don't are pretty much hated universally; Battle For the Abyss, for example. So much so that they events that occur there are barely even a footnote in other novels.

Unfortunately, GW's idea of "advancing the storyline" is putting in new units they've made to sell models, which is even more disappointing. How to make it more epic? Involve new units.

At least in the Heresy, the actual plot is based around Characters rather than sheer bolter porn. It's rare you see mention of things like "Plasma Cannon armed Devastators" or "Tactical Squads" or "Javelin Attack bikes". Similar to how Tolkien never described the battles in macro; no talk of how Gondorian Spearmen beat back Two Handed armed Orcs etc.

There are passing mentions of them of course; when it's relevant, but 40K stories are full of that.

Plus, with the exception of Graham McNeil, much of the characterisation of the Primarchs comes on extremely well.

The problem with McNeil? He writes it like a 40K novel. It's like comparing a Michael Bay movie, as opposed to a more cerebral one, like Baz Luhrmann, say.

I think we've digressed from the original point...

I'm talking about story telling not the GW sales team :rtfm:

I have seen some discussions about wh50k or something like that, try to look that up. Supposedly it was in development and shortly abandoned.
