Hello, my friends and I are looking to get into Warmachine a bit and I'm gonna be playing Cryx. We're starting with 25 point lists for now and so I thought I'd post mine here since I don't know much about the game and could use some guidance to get started.

Warcaster:
Witch Coven of Garlghast

Warjacks:
Deathjack
Reaper

Units:
5 Bane Knights
Withershade Combine

That should be "6 bane knights", as it's a leader and five grunts. You don't want to be a BK short :)

It could be interesting, but it's not an ideal witch conven army. A friend of mine plays Conven, and I've used his army before hand, so theres a few things you have to remember about them.

Most importantly, you have to remember that they are very very easy to kill. They have to stay as far back as possible, because they rely on their stealth and distance to survive. If they get too close, enemies can take a couple of pot shots at them, and you'll have a dead witch. For this reason, you really need an Arc Node or two in your army, so you can keep your witches back, yet still cast spells with ease. A nightwretch is a good option, as it's cheap and effective, though a defiler does get a spray attack for a point extra.

To fit in an Arc Node, perhaps you should either drop the Death Jack back to a normal Helljack, or drop the Withershade combine for one.

Another thing to remember with the conven is that they activate seperately, which means you can get up to 3 activations with your "caster". This allows you to do fancy things, like cast Infernal Machine on up to 3 different Jacks in a turn. Your entire battle group can be essentially +2 SPD and MAT and Terror causing. Very powerful for getting the first strike on your opponent. Get a powerful first strike, then use their feat and Boosted Stygian Abyss spells (shadow bind is awesome) to blunt the retaliation.

Hope that helps a little :)

Okay, with those helpful changes in mind, this is what I have now.

Warcaster:
Witch Coven of Garlghast

Warjacks:
Deathjack
Reaper
Nightwretch

Units:
6 Bane Knights

Solo:
Machine Wraith

Dropped the combine for the Nightwretch and with the 1 extra point, I picked up a Machine Wraith cause I like the model a lot. :p I was thinking of using a Cankerworm cause I like that model and it seemed interesting. Would that be able to be incorporated in some way or would it not fit? I was looking at the Malice, would that be good to switch the Reaper with if I wanted to use that?

Also, if I wanted to move up to 35 points, what units would be good to look at adding to better support the army?

good idea to drop the wither shade combine. They are an awesome unit but they take a bit of finesse to get the full effect.
if you add more points id up your bane knights to 10 and take a look at tartarus. Always a nasty combo. Seethers are always a good choice. 1 free focus and and charge plus if you hit with both you throw your oponnent.
Cankerworms are cool in tier aspyxious list but i dont see them much outside of that.

Okay, I think this is gonna be my final 25 point list:

Coven
Deathjack
2 Nightwretch
Stalker
6 Bane Knights

I'll use the Stalker to chase down their caster and try to assassinate it (making use of its massive control range + nodes to keep up infernal machine). The Nightwretchs are my nodes that'll shoot down troops or something. Deathjack will be Deathjack and smash everything while defending the Coven. The Bane Knights will basically serves as a wall to protect the coven.

Also, should I be using Stygian Abyss to kill off warcasters or does it work well targeting other things (ie hurting light jacks and such)?

For 35 points, I think I'm just going to take Tartarus and 6 more Bane Knights to back him up.

I fully intend on getting the malice as well and using both it and the reaper in my lists. Those harpoons are the best.

As for going up to 35pts, keep Bane Thralls in mind. The have stealth and are weapons masters like the knights and adding the unit attachment officer/bannerman they become Tough as well. I use both forms of banes in my list and they do wonders for me.

For 35 points I'm gonna add Tartarus, Bane Thralls, and a Necrotech to pal around with Deathjack. My question is, does Tartarus synergize more from working with Thralls or Knights. Running Coven, I could easily have the Knights stealthed and they can sneak around and kill stuff, plus the whole unit would have reach to take advantage. If he's with the Thralls I'd feel that he wouldn't be getting much use of his reach but then I wouldn't have to use Occultation on the Knights as much. Which do you think would work better?

I wouldn't worry about the necrotech just yet unless you want to break into some Mortenebra lists. He can't keep up with the deathjack at his SPD especially since deathjack is a prime candidate for infernal machine the necrotech will be 3 spd slower than the deathjack. IF he gets banged up just send him towards some living models and he will heal himself right back up.
