The template scatters the usual 2d6 minus your BS. I've recently been using the vindicators with potms and they are amazing. My opponents spent the entire game and devoted a lot of attention to them, allowing other stuff to live.
You've been asking a lot over using mm/hf speeders or typhoon. I wish I could give you a straight answer. I've been using the mm/hf and they're really amazing. But at the same time I'm debating swapping one or both out for two typhoons. I just hate the idea of sending them in to get their half-range d6 because they never survive the next player turn. So basically, with the typhoon you're getting more survivability and also a good marine killing weapon. If you're going to play a lot of marines or equivalent then using the typhoon may be better.
If you're worried about AV14 you have meltas in all your squads, an MM on the LRC, and str9 thunderhammers can also do it.
