So I'm replaying a game from last week, which I won for the first time against Tau. The player always tailors lists, never bringing the same thing. Last week she brought 7 meltas with a commander but deep struck on top of my tank and died during the mishap. She will have a lot of strength 10 and melta so I'm trying to play the objective game.

CAD
Lord Commissar
2 x veterans
Wyvern

Emperor’s Blade Assault Company
CCS- Chimera, Plasmagun
3 x Vets, Chimera
Hellhound

Emperor’s Fist Armoured Company
Pask Punisher, heavy bolter sponsons (still playing this until it is confirmed I cannot)

Exterminator
2 x Engineers, 2 x servitors each
Demolisher
Executioner
Executioner

I know it's a lot of vanilla troops but I want to wrap the tanks with the two vet squads to stop deep striking, if possible. My other option would be dropping the CAD and giving the vets in chimeras special weapons. I also thought about bringing a DKOK assault company with the endless troops, as I play DKOK just not the rules.

I am also, yesterday and today, finally gluing a skyhammer annihilation force, but was warned if I bring it she would bring some crazy formation that would table me turn 1. I don't like threats but I have a deal with the store owner if I play a game between 12-4PM on Saturday's I get 25% off my GW purchases. He believes people in the store, leads to more people coming into the store, so I have to play her.

I'm working on a white scars army, but it need the discount to buy the models, so I have to keep playing games I don't want to to get a competitive army, for once.

Any thoughts would be helpful!

Why not deny her targets, and show up with a thousand flashlig.... lasguns, and no tanks for her to melta?
I like tanks. I have 3 of every variant I love them so much. Also, we can rent shelves at the store and she keeps her entire collection there, so no matter what I bring, she will just write a list to counter it.

Why not show up with a list and not tell her what you're going to play, only the points level? In my gaming group we never share lists until we're about to deploy. If someone wants to use a Knight or D weapons out the ass they'll typically say it pre-game so that their opponent will stand a chance, but list tailoring as the game is starting? Forget that.

I'd say my thoughts on your list but it doesn't seem like it will make a difference against this opponent.

Good point. The problem is, I HAVE to play Saturday, so I have no choice if she wants to tailor her list. It sucks but no one else is available. I'm really thinking about bringing a couple different lists and flipping the script on her, tailor my list. If you were going to go up against Tau, using IG, what would you bring?

Sounds like an intense need to roll some dice man. Shame you have to face someone who sucks the fun out of it all by only playing hard counters to whatever their opponent brings.

I'd take stuff with Barrage and range, maybe with plasma Scions DSing against high priority targets. Either way I'd take a CAD for ObSec on those Vet Chimeras.

Oh man, do this. Take two lists that are polar opposites and straight up lie to her about which one you're going to field. She'll find out at deployment she's (potentially, Tau are still pretty good) boned and maybe will learn that all-comers lists are the way and the light.

I want a picture of her face when she realizes what's happening. I imagine it will be something like this:

Only better.

No I have to play to get my store discount. I play every Saturday from 12-4 so games are going on and when people come in I explain the game to them, in hopes they buy things. I'm in a college town and most everyone is gone, so it's either play her or don't get the discount.

I'm thinking a CAD objective secured chimera list OR an Emperor's Fist and Skyhammer combintation.

She might never want to play again if I bring two list or three different lists and put them out depending on what she brings.

Emperor's Fist and Skyhammer combintation
That gets my vote. My BA assault elements combined with my Guard tanks has always worked out great for me. Drop Pod/Deep Strike units are typically high priority enough that your opponent will have a hell of a time deciding which element of your army needs to be shot down first, and if you focus your efforts you may just kill enough to come out ahead before Tau do what Tau do and shoot the crap out of your army.

Isn't that almost exactly what she does to you, waits to see what you have and then makes a list tailored specifically against it? Tau are a top-tier army from what I read about tournaments (which is basically nothing), if anything you should be the one who gets to see her list and then tailor to it.

if she basicly tailors her list to whatever you bring. even without knowing it in advance, I wish you good luck. I agree with Ntaw, emperors fist and skyhammer would be a nice split of strengths.

and yeah Tau are in the top of best armies.

for future reference I advice to avoid such opponents. sucks the fun out of the game. also sounds like she might not handle losing well. wich makes it even less fun.

Try "Up to 9 Riptides (3 squads of 3) who can fire twice (once per game if they don't move), reroll their Nova Charges, and get +1BS per prior Riptide that has shot at the squad they're shooting at."

I wouldn't say "I'm playing 150 Infantry," let her build her list, then pull out your tanks--that's flat out lying. I would say "build your list and show it to me before I show you which miniatures I've brought today." She cannot justifiably have a problem with that, so you should be in the clear as long as your minis aren't openly visible.

OK fine. I guess that suggestion was a little eye-for-an-eye, I just greatly dislike people who 'can't lose' at this game.

Way to be all normal and polite about it about it

An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind. Except for the last guy, who would have one eye, and everyone knows that in the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king!

I just figure if you want to keep playing this person, maybe don't deliberately antagonize her--it's a fairly simple problem to address.
