Default shooting at depleted units

Strange question, the other day I had a game against a skaven player and his unit had a warlock engineer attached to it.

He only had 7 RnF models left and I then caused 12 wounds through shooting, he said that the warlock wouldnt get hit because he had more the 5 RnF, but I disagree.

If I cause more wounds than he has models surely the Warlock would get wounded. Also would it be 1 wound on each and the rest of the wounds lost or does he distribute them evenly amongst the models.

thanx

It seems that a strict reading of the rules would say he is correct. namely

So the unit gets vaporised leaving him standing by himself.

That is interesting, although it seems a little bit silly. What about magic missiles that are distributed as hits from shooting?

It is distributed as per shooting, meaning that as long as he has five RNF then he is safe. But pay attention as the unit champion does NOT count as RNF.
