Default Fantasy Army Fluff

How many of you actually dream up a background for your armies? Do you do this first and then design the list to match, or the other way around? Do you stick with this fluff even when changing the army a bit might make it more competitive? Have you written anything, thus naming your characters and providing a history for them?

Personally, the Bloodbulls of Khaarg are in the process of having their background story written (see 'Do I Look Fat In Red'). The story was in my mind while I was thinking of how I might convert a 2250 Ogre Kingdoms list into a Beasts of Chaos list. The storyline is what eventually convinced me to go Khornate, as I really couldn't see any of the other gods in the chaos pantheon having much of an interest in the OKs. The army list design was limited to the models I had, and so the storyline pretty much followed suit, though I really don't think it made much of a difference there. The army is fully painted and played in a tourney, and the full narrative background fluff is in the works now.

How about you guys? I find that WHFB makes storytelling a bit easier and a bit more enjoyable, I think.

basically yes. I love inventing backgrounds and characteristics of my armies. i've been working on my empires background for 4 years now. My fantasy khorne is led by a daemon prince known as the blood mourner he is also in my 40k army hes servived thousands of years shedding blood in the name of khorne.

for my ogre kingdoms army i read about the tribes and found ogre tyrant gruth spawn chomper whos tribe live near the chaos wastes and have more mutations than normal then decided to convert every ogre in my army to a chaos ogre and am very happy with it for my empire it was more a case of what models i had (50 + halflings) and then choosing a province that was near the moot but fitted in with the rest of the models i had and general egon straffe of the stirland household guard was born

i write some detailed storys often connection stories my other armies or friends armies. i am currently writing background for my dwarfs and there story is to be connected with another dwarf player the clans will have a long shared history of alliances and will likely be joined by marrage at some point.
my most developed story is for my imperial guard i am writing a codex style book for them with plannetary history customs and all sorts of other fluff. i have also named every model in the army so i can record any spectacular deeds on an honour roll and any spectacular failures on an MIA roll.

The creatures of the Warp have but one trait with which you need concern yourself - their undying contempt for the Emperor. It is your task to quell the rebellion they preach, and the only sure way is to destroy them utterly.
