Default 'Ironbeards'

We all know about Kargan, but there was, once upon a time, also Dumin Ironbeard.

Is 'Ironbeard' a clan-name (like, Dumin was Kargan's dad, or Grandson or something) or is it an honourific, nickname, or title?

Just curious.

:inquisitive cyclops:

EDIT: except it's 'Kurgan', isn't it?

Well, i have just answered this in my Snorri Ironbeard thead, but i will repeat here for compleatness:

Family names tend to be like Gurrinsson, i.e Gurrins' son, and changes with each generation depending on the fathers name, but clan names stay the same.
So Gotrek Gurnisson is Gurnis' son, and Kargan Ironbeard is of the Ironbeard clan. At least, thats my interpritation of it. Hope that helps.

Thanks Dafistofmork, and I'm sorry I ended up cluttering up your thread with my ramblings about Russian. I should of course have been cluttering up my own thread with my ramblings about Russian, but I found yours first...

Cheers for the info; it's been very helpful.

Oh, i have just rembered another naming method-after legandary deeds/personailty traits, such as orkslayer(some one who killed lots of orks), or redbeard(some one with a big red beard). The current high king is called grudgebearer, as it his his duty to bear the grudges of his people.

Dafistofmork is right. Dwarf names are generally from clan names, or after their parent, there are exceptions - such as being named after a trait or if they perform some deed of greatness.

Ironbeard I would surmise that it is probably a personal 'nickname' he was given. Otherwise, Ironbreaker champions are called Ironbeard's.

Ah; there's a possibility that "Ironbeard" to both Kargan and Dumin is an 'honorific, nickname or title' then? In other words, before they became kings, they could have been champions of Ironbreakers, and gained the name that way?

I see.. and the plot thickens.

Thanks for the info Kuffy; anyone else got any thoughts on this?

Maybe a key trait of the ironbeards is grey/silvery steel beards?
Beards are quite important in dwarf socity, so maybe it was a compliment that has been taken up by some ancestor and passed on to his children.
Or maybe GW messed up with the naming.
