Default Warhammer Background?

I play 40K, though I've been slowly (but surely) been attempting to get into the fantasy. I play Chaos, while my brother plays Necrons. I'd much rather collect a fantasy army, but he collects 40K and I know the majority of Warhammer players play 40K, which is one of the reasons why my progression from 40K to Fantasy has been slow. I just can't see myself collecting an army while he has the Necrons.

Fluff is my big influence, though. Not the players. I've been researching, and I haven't stumbled upon any major story like the Heresy. Is there one, and if so, where can I read about it?

Also, considering there isn't, which races are rich in fluff?

Thanks in advance.

There isn't one particular major story line but each race often has it's own indepth history. I would say that High Elves have a particularly rich fluff if that's what you are looking for.

I would recommend reading the Time of Legends books by BL, for more about some of the major players and events in Warhammer history .

The closest thing to the Heresy in the Warhammer Fantasy world is the first War Of Chaos, when the High Elves drained the uncontrolled winds of magic flowing from the Realm of Chaos at the north pole. A tragic story of desperate sacrifice and oh so fluffy, fluffy, fluffy. You can find it in the BRB, details in the High Elf army book, and bits in the army books for the Dark Elves, Lizardmen, Warriors of Chaos, and Chaos Demons.

I'd say that Sigmar is also a big thing in Warhammer history. Foundation of the Empire and all that. As is the Slann and the creation and failure of the Warp Gate, causing the Great Rift and the Chaos Wastes.

Incidentally, there has been various levels and degrees of trying to name Sigmar one of the lost Primarchs. At one time GW flatly decreed they were not in the same continuity to discourage this.

Read the trilogy: Malekith, The Winter King and Caledor.
They are fantastic books and are central to the Sundering, which is pretty much WFB's version of the HH. Well worth reading anyway though.

I'd like to play a race that's on the other side of the spectrum. A "good" race. I'm guessing, though, that the Empire, like the Imperium in 40K, have the richest "good" history.

take the above advice.

Hit the high elf novels, read malekith and loved it, currently trying to get through sigmar but struggling.

If your looking for good armies, i would tentatively say because they all have flaws
bretts
lizardmen
wood elves
high elves
empire
kislev

generally the races of men could be considered the good guys

kudos to lillian thorne for the awesome sig

HE and lizards are actively good, WE, empire, dwarves and brets are passively good.

There is a lot of background about both HE and the empire... not so much about any other race. As for the evil side the vast majority is about chaos (daemons or warriors) with a little about OnG or skaven. That does leave a great many races with barely anything written about them.

However, the thing about WHFB is... a lot, if not all, of the races have strong connections to the real Earth world. I have made a list of what I believe were the inspiration for the races, and if you think from this starting position and then go from there, you might get a better idea of how each race works. The links are just purely inspirational.... nothing to do with how good/bad they are in game or morally.

Beastmen = Medieval Spain

Bretonnia = Medieval France

Daemons of Chaos = The Dark Ages

Dark Elves = American Civil War (But also could be the Americans after the American War of Independence) (Or they could also be representations of Canadians... War of 1812 and all that)

Dwarfs = Not sure really... but Irish + Scottish tribes

High Elves = New World Colonists (Or one side in The American Civil War)

Lizardmen = Mayan/Aztec/Ican/Toltec

Ogre Kingdoms = Pretty much any sellswords in history.

Orcs & Goblins = Gauls/Germanic Tribes/Saxons/Etc

Skaven = Black Death Rats

The Empire = The Holy Roman Empire

Tomb Kings = Egyptians

Vampire Counts = Eastern Europe Countries & Myths involving that area

Warriors of Chaos = Scandinavians/Vikings

Wood Elves = Americans resettling in Europe (Such as US military personal in Germany's US Army bases)

Araby Empire: Middle-East (Does not exist as a playable race.... Yet!)

Cathay Empire: China (Does not exist as a playable race.... Yet!)

Nippon: Japan (Does not exist as a playable race.... Yet!)

Kingdoms of Ind: India (Does not exist as a playable race....Yet!)

Amazons: Amazons (Discontiuned.... Pretty hard doing an army based on Immortal naked women!)
