Default Skaven in Nagash, TONS OF SPOILERS!

Ok I've been reading the Nagash trilogy, third book and I've become confused about the skavens.

I was under the impression that skavens were all on the lookout for themselves.
I thought they would rather stab their superiors in the back than save them.

In one of the chapters a Skaven warlord and an assassin commander were trapped in a fire both were rescued by the assassin's underlings. Their clans then spent tons of money fixing both of them up, and whats more they were actually guarded.

Well remember the nature of army that been organized by the Skaven. The Council of Thirteen likely gave them two objectives, serve and protect the Warlord they appointed so that lesser lords and chieftains underneath him don't try to replace him and renegotiate the complex agreements in regards to the Warpstone claim and to kill him should he try to take the Warpstone for himself. Secondly while Skaven are obsessed with their own personal power they still realize they can be rewarded for saving a superior's life.

That's easier to explain. You see do to the massive amount of Warpstone present beneath the mountain. All the clans were obsessed with gaining the largest share of the Warpstone possible. The Warlord and Assassin were the top members of their clan present in the campaign. Their lives were valuable to their masters back in the Skavenblight solely to enforce their claim and to take the blame for any great failures. Because of the insanely complex nature of Skaven politics it was actually easier and cheaper to patch them up than to replace them with other clan leaders.
