Default Why?

Ok..I've been reading the Nagash trilogy and I got to wondering..why is it VC skeletons can't use bows but TK can. Is it purely a balance thing or did some get bored and say don't put them in.

The designer diaries for TK say that they tried to make the two armies different (for example Grave Guard an have Great Weapons and Tomb Guard can have Halberds) so I suspect it was either balance or differentiation.

The fact that zombies are in there doesn't do anything?

Fluff wise vc undead use missile weapons all the time, be it crossbows for von carsteins, bows for the brettons/ red duke/ blood dragons, and guns for the vc pirates

I am hopeful that when VCs get redone they will get a missile troop and war machines

I think that the new TKs and growth of their backgroundd lore has really differentiated the armies

TK are massively worse then VC in the movement phase, worse in combat (in general) and a lot weaker in the magic phase... but they have a total advantage in the shooting phase. GIve VC even vaguely decent shooting and they'll just shit all over TK.... let alone in comparisons to other armies.
If they did get hald decent shooting the sacrifices from other aspects of the army would be enough to make most VC players cry out in protest...

But imagine, a gunline of troops you can constantly revive. Even if the shooting was shitty there is still the law of averages.

Woah, that's just totally outside the realms of acceptability... oh, no, hang on a moment, isn't that just TK?

I'm guessing we have different ideas of what a gunline is: weirdly my view of a gunline is that it doesn't need any 'guns'

Vamps do the whole "Revive our dudes!" things better than TK though. Currently at least.

Wait...isn't that called Necrons. They could make it costly

The original undead lists.... back in 2nd through to 4th or whenever TK appeared had Undead in Sylvania with chariots and bows and even cross bow options. When the armies changed and TK developed, they went with two different themes.

The TK overall are more rounded an army with considerable strength.... you have some great elite units and some interesting choices like "golden age" etc. I think we will see when VC are redone a return to masses of hordes of zombies and undead creeping forward with ghouls etc led by the necromancer/vampire ideal. The VC have always had the zombie option but with 8th and even 7th there was no point to them as the rules were silly for the ghouls... vs zombies as core choices. But.... let us see what the future holds. At the moment most VC players are stuck in the ghoul advance busing vampires or others forward.
