Block Fortress is available in the Apple App Store for iOS devices running iOS 4.3 or later
The first thing that people will notice, is that Block Fortress is borrows heavily from a certain Minecraft game and it makes no secret about it. The game both plays, looks and feels like Minecraft. At least for a while. After that its something different, and in a way, something better.
The game combines the building part of Minecraft with an FPS Tower Defense game, and it does so rather well. In the Survival game mode you start of small, harvesting minerals, killing Goblocks and farming cash from them. You build up a base using different blocks (minecraft style!) and place turrets, ranging from standard machine gun emplacements to mortars and orbital lasers, grab your gun and try to survive. Between waves you repair and build up your base, and once you are ready you take on the next wave. At first the game feels a bit overwhelming, and chances are you will get slaughtered before wave 10. But after playing a while, learning the crafting mechanics and getting a hold of some strategy the game turns into heaps of fun.
There is also a Quick Start mode, which gives you a certain amount of cash and minerals. You build your base, and try to survive. Unlike Survival, its not divided into waves, so once you have built your base, you are stuck with it until you die. There is also a Sandbox mode, which gives you unlimited everything. It allows for some great creative bases, and best of all, you can share and download fortresses in this mode.
When it comes to graphics, the game might as well be a modded version of Minecraft. It looks and it feels like Minecraft, so there are no surprises here.
Unlike most FPS games played on touch screen devices, Block Fortress actually plays and controls quite well. This is actually the only FPS game that has not made me want to run and grab hold of a gaming controller the moment I started it up. Whilst a mouse and keyboard would do wonders, it still plays extremely well with touch controls once you get a hang of them.
Overall, Block Fortress is a very good game. Whilst the learning curve can be a bit steep, and the touch screen controls might not be in everyones taste, its still a very enjoyable game, and allows for endless hours of enjoyment.
