I'm not really sure what you plan on doing with this guy. He's pretty heavy magic but packing gear to fight in challenges. The forbidden lore just seems like a random throw-in. With your vampire lord, you should concentrate on one type of character or the other predominantly. The axe of Krell really isn't as useful as you think as its primarily for challenges, where you really DON'T want your lord, especially with only a 2+ armour. Consider these:

Magic Lord:
Vampire Lord - LvL 3
Skull Staff
Helm of Commandment
Dark Acolyte
Master of the Black Arts
Summon Ghouls
-Bunker him in a unit of ghouls behind the army in order to keep him out of combat and share is WS7 with wherever needed. Its key to keep him out of combat as he has no armour and no weapons.

Combat Lord:
Vampire Lord - LvL 3
Blood drinker
Flayed Hauberk
Crown of the Damned
Beguile
Infinity Hatred
Red Fury
-This guy is a beast in combat, protected by a good armour save and a decent ward save... Plus he allows you to not need to worry about healing your GG as the sword will do it for him. Stupidity sucks but you don't need it in combat. Potentially 8 attacks with rerolls to hit and wound bringing guys back.

Vampire
-Banner of the dead legion
-flayed hauberk
-red fury

Not really built to do anything. Red fury is a great ability but you have no weapons which make it lackluster. The banner really isn't worth it unless your planning on being outnumbered but with summon powers it really isn't worth it. Also, you can't have the same magic item twice, so no two flayed hauberks. These are common vampire/wight king builds I bring for different roles.

Vampire - Warmachine Hunter (BSB)
Sword of battle
Armour of Night
Talisman of Lynci
Infinite Hatred
Beguile
-Stick him in a unit of ghouls and move up the field. He's got a 18" charge range and 4 attacks with rerolls to hit and wound. The armour is for when hes out in the open, he's at a -3 to be hit at the very least and the BSB is to help him just in case he's up against any sort of decent SCR.

Vampire - Support Vampire
Black Periapt
Crown of Command - as long as you don't have it elsewhere.
Dark Acolyte
Summon Ghouls
-Cheap and great to keep the troops topped up. Black periapt gives you another power dice if needed and keep him in the back of the armour as well to make use of the crown.

Vampire - Support Vampire
Book of Arkhan
Dark Acolyte
Summon ghouls

OR

Vampire - Support Vampire
Book of Arkhan
enchanted shield
Avatar of Death (GW/heavy armour)
infinite hatred

Wight King - BSB (for challenges)
Sword of Kings
enchanted shield
Skeletal Steed - Barding
-Great for fighting challenges, killing blow on a 5+, T5 /w 3 wounds and a 1+ armour save. Can take out most units in a challenge, even lords!

2 x 5 dire wolves

Great screens and warmachine hunters. Good choices.

4 x 15 crypt ghouls

Looks good, I would put Ghasts in the units as it protects your heroes and against other unit champions, 3 poisoned attacks ain't bad!

2 x 20 grave guard /w full cmd

Looks good, I don't know about 2 units unless you planning on more protection somehow. It's pretty hard to keep them both topped up AND your ghouls. I find 1 unit with a combat lord and wight king is usually pretty devastating. I would also use a magic banner- Banner of the Barrows. This coupled with the crown of command means you'll be hitting most things on 2s!!! It also affects the wight king.

4 fell bats

Another good unit, although I would either take a minimum size units and raise em up with the summon power (or keep them cheap) or take em in units of 5+ to make sure you have enough attacks in combat.

1 varghulf

Great unit, consider taking another one!

Changes above!

A sample 2000 list I would run would be:
