Default Is it just me, or is Horus Heresy a really bad game?

Me and my brother played this board game in the past easter. More like bored game.

It seems the rules are utterly poorly written. Very very abstracted, and impossible to wrap one's head around on the first go. You have to like go forward two pages, back one page, forward ten pages, then read the first page, maybe even more - just to understand a single thing. It is really messy. It's like the person who wrote this had the attention span of a bag of feathers, speared by a poker.

No dice is used. Just the cards. Which really doesn't feel right for some reason. And the 'turn hopper' seems pretty redundant. I don't think anything interesting at all happened through event cards of any form.

So yeah, my brother was pretty miffed at me near the end for making him play this convoluted tragedy.

Does anyone have a better first-time experience with this?

I've had recurring nightmares
That I was loved for who I am
And missed the opportunity
To become a better man

GW is not famous for their well written rules.

I've never notice it. i tought they were just the retailers!
Sorry for that.
(altough i've never had a really good opinion even on most of their rules writing. Really verbose and convoluted, they can be.)

This aint bad game, but not good either. Rulesbook is typical FFG mess, have to go back and forth several times before getting rules right. Lack of dice wont matter at all, i have played so many different wargames in past that they arent needed. Cards manage this quite fine, but could be better. It captures quite fine chaos around emperors palace, but certain strategies are too viable.

If you want great warhammer-based boardgame, then go buy Chaos in the Old World. You need 4 players for that, but replay value is great and you can play few games in evening. This i truly recomment to any warhammer fans. Even BGG lists this game on alltime top 100
