Default 1000 points salamanders - what's missing?

I've been working on my 1000 pts sallies with the new codes, and i've hit a road block with what to take to finish it off. I have just over a hundred points left and I'd like opinions on what i should use to finish off the army, as well as general critique.

This is what i have so far:

HQ: 190

Vulkan

Elite:205

5 x sternguard - Heavy flamer, 4 x combi melta, rhino

Troops: 345

10 x tactical marines - flamer, MM, Rhino
10 x tactical marines - flamer, MM

Fast Attack: 138

3 x bikes - 2 x Meltagun
1x attack bike - MM

Total: 878

So far i've been looking at taking more sterngaurd (they will be riding with Vulkan), a drop pod MM dread, a whirlwind, a HF/MM landspeeder or a vindicator.

The bikes will be used to steam across the table and pop tanks, the tacticals will be squadding up to take objectives and reduce threats, and sternguard + vulkan will be an aggressive unit to help take objectives.

What do you think i need to round this out? I haven't played Vulkan yet so i'd like to try him out and see how he fares.

to get the best out of vulkan(old codex havent read the new) its really all about master crafted and re-rolls. and i dont really see you "utilizing" that ability.
i would and this is just my own opinion is to see more things like dreads with twin flamers, stern with combi flamers/melta.
flamers on tac are just kinda wasted, it would take at least 2/3 turns to use them.

but to just add to what youv got i would suggest either a thunderfire cannon, or a vindicator, just something to help deal with hordes

Tool up your sarges and make use of the free master crafting, then go with a stormtalon with skyhammer missiles to round the points out

I forgot about the MC rule, good shout.

Is the talon effective? I've only just got back into playing so i've never seen one played and have no idea how it operates on the table.

It's not too bad actually. It's a fairly decent anti infantry/light vehicle hunter in the skyhammer configuration

I just had a good long look through the rules - i'm pretty keen on this idea

I was leaning towards the vindicator but it might be fun to play with a flyer instead

Think i should swap out the bikes for a dread? I'm not 100% sold on the bikes at present.

Nah, go with your gut, I'm in fact planning on adding bikers to my marine force. At 1000 points I think bikers would be pretty annoying for the enemy to get to grips with.

Bikers and the talons will give you some much needed speed. I think the list you have is pretty solid. Best way to find out is get it in the table and give it a run out
