I always base after fully completing the model, after this I apply sand/grit etc with paint not glue. Once this has dried, I paint the base, ink and drybrush.

As I'm using paint, I can paint right up to and around the feet of the model using a small brush. I tend ti base in sections and dip the base into the sand/grit as I'm going.

I do something similar to @Logaan except using PVA glue. A generally "old school" look.

I finish the model.

Paint the base the a darker "under" colour. Usually a dark green.

Spread PVA glue+water (70/30 ish) on the top of the base using an old brush with very short bristles.

Immerse the base in a mix of gravel ballast. I use a mix of two different grits. Ensure the ballast covers the glue.

Remove the model from the ballast and let dry.

Angle the model's base over the ballast and tap the side to shake loose any unfixed gravel.

Paint the gravel with a thinned out layer of the basing under colour.

Highlight by 'wet' dry brushing with a lighter colour. E.g light green.

Add a dry brush with an even lighter colour. E.g. green-yellow.

Finally I repaint the base rim with light green to match the green table.

ok so this is extremely easy..i alwayscomplete my base before adding the mini..
what i do is
1.paint the base..
2.drill holes in the base of the mini before painitng
3.after base coast are complete..i drill the into the base and super glue the mini to the base via paper clip from the feet to the bases..

its not that hard nor time comsuming.and the overall effect is quite nice
