It often happens that some random guy calls me "Potato". I don't know how i can be like a potato. Like... A potato is grey-brown outside and yellow inside. What does potatoes and white people have in common that potatoes and other people don't?

What I meant is, there is no need to discriminate between [racism] and [homophobia] for exemple.

Both these behavior use exactly the same cognitif processes and biases and are harmful for the same reason, just not to the same people. But as all people are equal in value, being harmful to Steve is exactly like being harmful to Janet.

The distinction matters when you're looking at why things happen. People might be racist because of socio-economic reasons and the perceived effect of illegal immigration, say like Mexicans in the US. People might be Homophobic because Jesus told them it was bad. People might be sectarian because of happenstance in a long term conflict, like in Ireland.

If you're going to tackle these problems in society you need to define them properly first. They're very much like cancer, better to know what type of cancer you have before trying to treat it.

No, they just happened to make an observation for no apparent reason...

Agreed.

Althought all forms of discriminations are equally harmful no matter what their sources.

There is no reason to combat racism more than homophobia or sectarism. All these causes are a priori as worthy as one another.

We are coming close to an agreement here.

Aramoro 11-04-10 02:33 PM

Oh I agree all forms of discrimination are harmful regardless of source. I just noted it as this is a topic specifically about racism. The whys and wherefores of racial abuse etc.

The different forms of discrimination all have different roots, and different roots in each society in which they happen. So they each bear discussing in isolation.

Yes and no.

You have to be careful not to cure one racism for another kind of discrimination.

Don't trade racism for discrimination against idiots, or criminals, or whatever you were accusing the object of your racism to be.

The problem is the hate. Not the mistake.

It's okay to think that all blacks rape women. It's no better or worse than think that X^2 = 4 if and only if X = 2. It's a mistake.
The problem is when you start hating black people. It would still be a problem in a possible world where all black people actually did rape women.

I'm starting to sound like a "hate the sin love the sinner" now.

Well as I am African -american I feel im subjugated to the word n***er and for some reason it sets me off like I threw a kid the last time someone called me that.

ROT 11-21-10 03:33 PM

I'm 1/4 German, and before i was big enough to take care of myself (In a school environment) I would constantly get called a Nazi.

Considering I was about 12/13, I was incredibly shocked about this; having everyone collectively insult you, it was my first experience with 'light' racism.

Luckily enough, In my school I'm not picked on, simply because I'm fairly big in comparison to anyone else in my school, and I'm in 6th form - so there's a general line of respect going up the school, and I fall into the well-respected age-group.

But I do remember it being really shit, getting ripped on though, and can't imagine what it'd be like to be permanently insulted for race/background. - That's why I'm very against racism. (Y)

I may be sticking my neck out here, but I do find that people seem to think only white people can be racist.

It seems to be ok for black people to call each other N***er and I've even heard it said to White and Asian guys, but always a black guy saying its.
say it back and YOUR the racist.

I also think its funny how we have the MOBO awards, BET TV and Black history month.

What if we had the WOBO awards, Wet TV or white history month.
I personally think there would be an outcry from all White/Blacks/Asians saying its racist to have these things.

I've also applied for jobs in the past that I was turned down for and I quote this 'As the advertisement stated the position is only open to people from the ASIAN community'.
what so a white or black man/women can't plant a fucking flower bed or rose bush.

If you ask me, I don't have time to worry about race, EVER-ONES a cunt until proven otherwise.

Yeah I once went for a porn star position and was turned away for being Caucasian. They said they didn't see the need to state race with the minimum 12 inch cock requirement.
