Tyranid question

Hey guys i guess this is a fluff question, sorry if its in the wrong place.

I was looking over one of my friend's tervigons, and i was wondering what the giant "smoke stack" looking things on the back of the larger tyranids were.

Anyone care to share?

Thanks!

i believe they are to vent gasses that the tyranid bodies create, but im not 100%

I always thought of them are heat stacks, There bodys most produce a insane amount of heat and that is the muffler of there body. Also it could also be a way for them to pull in bio matter from the air to continue to produce there ammuntion for there guns

My guess is heat. A big creature like that would have a heap of internal heat, like the dinosaurs did. So they need to get rid of it. As they have a chitinous carapace you'd need something that lets the heat through the armoured shell so they use a smoke stack.

I wonder if that means if you jump on their back and plug it with your finger they'd explode ?

Well if you think about it Magpie_Oz if you go with them being vaccums to gather bio mass the heat there bodies produce can become pressure to fire there weapons. I think this is also possible.

Great so long as you give them nothing to shoot at they'll explode then !

If you were after bio mass tho' I'd reckon they'd point down to where the bio mass is not up in the air.

stalarious 08-23-12 07:35 AM

Thats true....It could also be a mixture of both kinda like a A/C unit cause they really wouldn't need that many "vents" to remain cool.

EDIT: But as for pointing down that would only work for bio mass that is in large quanity I was thinking about portions that are like pollen floating in the air like stuff blown up from high volacity projectiles.

Magpie_Oz 08-23-12 07:54 AM

You'd need a shed load of pollen to feed a 'nid I'd reckon

In the fluff there is is 2 purposes

1) heat ventilation, as suggested tyranids run "hot". There are some of the older fluff that suggests they effectively steam. Note this is actually quite energy wasteful as heat is the most difficult form of energy to trap and reconvert, so goes against nids as they super efficient hunter so unsure if its still canon.

2) spore dispersion, Larger tyranids excrete spores in the atmosphere and surrounding air to increase the rate of tyranification of the prey world, generally poisoning its defenders in the process. Some creatures are designed exclusively for this but all larger creatures have some extent of spore mechanism

Tyranids don't get battlefield creatures to vacuum!

Oh and returning to the if they don't fire they explode, yet thats true, its expressly mentioned in the codex for one of the guns, the main gun creature can be eaten by the ammo creature if the ammo is not expelled at regular intervals, think it might be the fleshborer hive but can't recall off the top of my head
