Well, if he's going to be convalescing, why not a night in? Make (or order) his favorite dishes for dinner. And then spend some time talking over wine, coffee, or tea (music being optional).
I'm sure you don't need advice on how to make your living space an intimate one, but one thing that I've found essential is: turn off the phones. No outside distractions are a must.
I can honestly say I usually don't remember who gave me what (or what I gave who), but I usually remember the time I've spent with a loved one (it's been over ten years, but I can still remember telling her the fish wasn't dry [it was] and on an other occasion when my parents arrived for a surprise visit--ah, memories).

Hahaha. Wish that could happen, but we have something called roommates. We'll probably throw a small party for it too though, if not on his bday the weekend before, with homemade cake and everything.

buy him tools, set of good screw drivers or a hammer or something else, every man needs good quality tools, i have bought all my younger brothers tools since they left school, mainly so they are prepared to do odd jobs in there own homes and more so they dont ask to borrow mine and break or never return them.
