Default Is it okay to insult a person's holy book?

This thread is a carry over from the Harold Camping thread and in particular Gen.ahab's statement that it's not okay to bash/insult someone's holy book.

Let's hear your thoughts.

Keep it clean this time

Don't give me rep, just poke My Bum ... and then give me rep.

Yes, everyone has the right to be insulted and offended, get over it and move on.

It's fine to disagree with it, but to take the complete piss out of it in front of the person's face is never OK. I don't mind people having a grudge against them, seeing as I can't stand them myself, but that doesn't give me the right to completely take the piss. Even if it sounds like utter bullshit that a five-year old came up with during Postman Pat, if the guy believes it then you have no right to knock them.

In this regard people shouldn't shy away from expressing their true views at the risk of someone being offended or to simply be PC, to an extent (especially in Britain, where we take the piss out of ourselves as much as we do anyone/thing else). Reasonable religious people can acknowledge that their holy book is a flawed guide, written by men of a different age. A moral guide that they may believe to still have relevance, fair enough. But its when you come across those that believe it to be the absolute word of their god that truly brings difficulties, notably for debate. In that case I don't see any reason (beyond if its on here and therefore the forum rules) why you shouldn't simply tell it as it is.

If someone adheres strictly to a holy book (unless they live in an overwhelmingly religious country) they should be used to scepticism anyway.

Is it OK?
Depends on so many variables the answer is not straight forward in the slightest.

Insult = About as much as it is acceptable to go round insulting some one about any aspect of their life or person. So no not really.

Question = Oh yes, but in a polite way.

My question is why would you need to insult a holy book or persons beliefs ?
I have my views on Religion (mainly it's a nice Idea, shame it has been ruined by humans.)

I am lucky enough to live in a country where we have freedom of speech, does not mean I have to shout about things I believe or belittle the beliefs of others.

You should take what you dish out.

Christian's for example, must understand that they WILL be painted with the same brush (even though there is many variants of christianity). It's a religion that's killed hundreds of thousands for being different.

To turn around and whinge like a bitch when someone throws verbal mud at their holy book is hypocritical and pathetic.

Even their own Book says 'be strong in the face of satan' in someway or another.

Man the Fuck up.

It depends on what you mean by: okay. Should it be a crime, I don't think so, there isn't anything that injures someone.

Does it end any meaningful discussion? Yes. An insult, by its very nature, suggests that it is not a logical question or observation rather one that is meant to be offensive and hurtful. So while it isn't technically wrong, its extremely unhelpful and will only turn a discussion into a flame war.

I think it's perfectly ok to insult a book, a book is an inanimate object, you can call it whatever you want.
When it comes to religious books surely it's down to whatever God or power you have insulted to take action, not their followers. If I choose to insult Christianity for example, God will judge me, not Jim down the road who goes to churh and thinks he knows best.

If you are offended by what I may say about your holy book then go away and pray that I stop. If what I'm doing is against God's will then He'll stop me, if He couldn't give a shit then maybe you shouldn't either.
