Heh. I had to look up brown sauce myself. I'd heard the name before, but never knew what it actually was.

Come to think of it, I might be able to find it around here...

Good old brown sauce, it is officially the only sauce you can legally put on a bacon sandwich. Using ketchup carries a possible life sentence.
If you are having a BLT (Which, due to the addition of salad muck is no longer technically a bacon sandwich) you should use mayo, brown sauce would be wrong.

Well, it's much cheaper than buying everyone christmas presents... just buy like 40 bucks of veges, add vinegar and a shitton of sugar- presto! Everyone's happy with a series of incredibly cheap jars.

Hey, what's wrong with making chutney?

Judging by the ingredients, brown sauce is what we call barbecue sauce.

Ooh no no no, HP is HP, it's not BBQ sauce, thats sweet sticky stuff for going on ribs!
Brown Sauce (HP) is a sort of savoury, slightly spicey but not hot, tangy sauce similar in flavour to Branston pickle, only different.
It's unique and was invented to be the one and only thing in the whole world that makes bacon even more tasty. The only thing it has in common with BBQ sauce is the colour, that's about it.

Brown sauce? HP?

From what I understand, it is similar (though not exactly the same) as A1 (for us United State-icans).

Also: Mmm, bacon.

Clearly you are incredibly passionate about your condiments, and I salute you. Thanks for the clarification, I think I might have a rough idea what it is now (although I can't be sure unless I actually try it. Oh well, guess I have to make a trip to Britain...)

Gee, this thread makes me hungry. I wonder if we have any bread dumplings...

They sell HP sauce in the US (that's how I was able to recognize what to put on my steal when I first got to aussieland).

As for the bacon debate, sorry but the stringy american crisp bacon wins out big time. I so miss that bacon. When the wife and I honeymooned in Japan the hotel we stayed in featured an american style breakfast bar. I was in absolute heaven....mmmmm crispy bacon.

See thats the issue with American Bacon... its not Bacon its... not even remotely like Bacon! Real Bacon is like Ham... thick juicy and sizzling... and we don't need to roll it or dunk it in 5 different types of butter, flavor or wrap it in plastic to enjoy it...

As for condiments... well I appologise to those I offended with my Brown Sauce comments... Australia has HP sauce but we refer to it as HP... or HP Sauce.
And I stand by my homemade chutney man comments... its not natural... next you will be making your own jam or opening the kitchen for devonshire teas and starting to think about growing lavender commerically.... kill the rot at the start... stop making chutney now.

As for those without Bacon.... spare a thought for some Asian Countries... where all you can get is Turkey Bacon.... I was in Singapore a few months ago... went to get Bacon... could only find Turkey Bacon. I flew out the next day in disgust.... disgust! Damn those fake bacon countries... probably some type of terrorism or communism I am sure of it.

What's the big thing about American bacon?
I always thought it was just what we call streaky bacon, which is cured belly pork, similar to Italian Pancetta, and is awesome!
We also get back bacon, more meat less fat meaning less flavour.
