Default Flaming Swords=Effective?

I really have never seen the point of having a flaming sword.... I mean it would cauterize a wound, leaving the possibility of your opponent bleeding out much smaller.

I mean if you're trying to kill someone in a battle/duel wouldnt you want to cut them and have them bleed? I mean if you lose enough blood you're gonna get a little woozy leaving you at a disadvantage for a long drawn out duel.

Why then are flaming swords so awesome?

It's more a morale thing then anything else. Who's going to go up against a guy so confident he's lit his weapon on fire, destroying the temper of the blade in the process? Is he so overconfident he can kick your ass he doesn't need a sharp weapon to do it?

You'll forgive me, but you must be mistaken. I've met your makers, and they don't even know your name...

ah, well the more effective approach, is why would one use a flaming sword, as you said, when it would stop bleeding? is to stop the bleeding. The fact is, is useing a flaming sword is the work of a torturer, rather then a killer.

Killers would never use a flaming sword, someone who wants their opponent to suffer would, and would make smaller cuts, to give pain, and suffering, over death and bleeding.

Though this thread is not supposed to be serious at all... The point I am trying to reach is why? I am talking about a full blown battle to the death against a skilled opponent or on a battle field where there would be no time for torture, unless..... I take it you play dark elves who would toy with their opponents as such

nah it wouldn't, it would destroy your night vision and you would not be able to see anything past the sword (like the person you are trying to kill). It would also make you a very good target for archers and whatnot.

It would however be a boon for making a brew.

I've often been thankful for the +D6 fire damage of a flaming sword in Baldurs Gate so not entirely useless.
