in my course it can branch off into specialist 2D and 3D animation using several programs and the like. there are gaming courses that will let you specialise in certain areas, suc has character design, logic operations, storyboard etc. You just have to look for them. All the best with getting what you want though. I know very little about astrophysics courses though so still check them out....

For level design buy unreal 3 for the pc and get to grips with the unreal engine that comes with it. So many next gen games use it.

yes, having base knowledge of how to get assets into game and how to create levels in an editor are pretty important.

another good engine is the source engine (half-life 2). I did all my demoreel work in the source engine and it served me pretty well, it also has quite a large community and alot of documentation.
