As a white South African, who is well aware of the Apartheid era history (from both sides, getting it drilled into me since I was 6 years old and then later studying if further history at university), I am disgusted by the turn this thread has taken. And fuck those articles, both of them. The moment they tried blaming Mandela for the stupid shit Jacob Zuma and his chronies do it lost all validity to me. It's dumping things people he knew did on him and trying to make him look responsible for it. And ignoring that a lot of the bad things that happened happened during a period of world upheaval during the Cold War, fighting a regime who didn't blink twice themselves at torture, murder, acts of terror and, hell, even shooting fucking school children. And quite frankly, what Zuma does now personally and with regards to the country has sweet fuck all to do with a guy who has been inactive politically for over a decade. The article also conveniently ignores all the good he has done in recent times and how much he has come to mean to the South African population.
But if you guys just want to look at the past, during the time of said actions, let's look at the circumstances under which they operated. They were fighting a hardcore racist regime (heavily backed by US capital by the way... yeah, real nice leaders of the "free world")... And the fact is, the British themselves also had a big part to play in the racial segregation in this country, long before Apartheid even started. Fact is both those articles seem like they are trying to dump the blame on him for a whole lot of things he really was not responsible for (though I will grant a part of) and totally ignoring the external factors that pushed him down that path.
He did terrible things fighting for what he believed was a good cause, and spent decades in a living hellhole, to pay for his actions. He did his time. And I'm -not- saying he was a saint, but overall he was a good person who just made some bad choices. In the time after his release, and while he was politically active, he never worked towards anything but a fair, equal, united country... don't blame him that the people who came after him are destroying what he was trying to create because of their own greed and corruption.
And quite frankly, entering a R.I.P. thread for people who want to pay their respects to him, just to hate on a dead guy... yeah... I think that says it all.
The human appendix. Proof of a higher power. A divine kill switch so to speak.
No one really likes a smartass, but people tend to like a dumbass even less.
