Honestly, I would not be shocked if we are having a record year in it. There is a lot of it that just never makes it to the national or world level of news. I know there has been a few in the last year around where I live and I'm way off the beaten track in terms of population centers.

It's certainly been a hell of a few months for the states. It's starting to wear on me how every single time there's a horrific mass shooting we're not supposed to talk about firearms legislation for a while, because we're always in the aftermath of a mass shooting these days.

It's a conspiracy! Secretly, they are causing more and more mass shootings until eventually we can never talk about gun legislation! It's the gun companies manipulating the world!

Yep violence is down, not denying it. Your example also states that 3/4 of homicides in that time frame are firearm related. So cool we are being less violent! Boo guns are still a major issue of the violence.

A word of nice, non-violent people is a reality everyone needs to accept as not going to happen. the sooner America, and Western Civ countries realize that we still live with nut jobs, dissenters, psycho's, and violent individuals in our ranks the sooner we will be safer.

Vigilance is eternal if we want a peaceful world. that's my honest opinion after 5 years military and 3 years in the Security business.

scscofield, no offense meant but have you ever looked into crime as a whole. I'm no gun advocate, but even I realize that many people die in crimes that don't even use firearms. If anything firearms make crime look good in a sickening way. Plenty of people are killed by knives, swords, axes, kitchen utensils, vehicles, .e.t.c. In short people die because other "people" mean them harm, not because they possess a gun. Guns are just an easier tool, a "fire and forget" weapon that dehumanizes killing in my honest opinion.

It's much harder to look another living being in the face and then stab them through the heart. Just saying, guns are not the reason, if anything we only have ourselves to blame as a society.

Not nearly as much as people. I think it's interesting that the violence is going down as gun ownership is going up. Thanks to obama there are millions more guns in circulation. I could be wrong but I believe the last number I read was seven million since he took office. He might not be able to run an economy any other way but into the ground, but that guy certainly has a knack for selling firearms.

Steady decline in ownership for the past 4 decades. The increased guns in circulation are the declining gun owners buying extra weapons for the most part.
