Default Windows Movie Maker Help!

Hey, a quick question to any of you that know how Windows Movie Maker works, I'm trying to edit a clip so that it doesn't have any music as a backdrop, but the characters are still talking - so far I've only found a way that removes all the audio but In this case I only want to remove some of the audio, and I was wondering if anybody would be willing to help me out with this.

PS - I'm a total newbie in Movie Maker so I may use this thread to ask more questions. Thanks!

And I will also be able to give rep to a person who comes up with a solution that works.

Are the different parts of the audio to the movie on different tracks? Or the same one? Otherwise it's near impossible to remove only dialogue unless you have specific editing software like Logic afaik.

They're from the same video that I downloaded from Youtube onto Movie Maker.

So from memory you have on the display:
- The video track
- The audio track

You say you can edit the audio track, but it affects all levels (dialogue, music, sfx etc)? And there is only one audio track? Or is the audio actually part of the video track, not separate?

If it helps, I'm talking about this video here, specifically 0:30 to 0:36 - and I downloaded the whole thing to Movie Maker before splitting the clip to give me the required section that I needed - but essentially I was wondering if there was a way to remove the background music without affecting the dialogue between the two characters, and yeah - I think I can edit the audio track in the way that it affects all dials.:

You may be able to get an audio editor to try and mess around with the sound levels but changing them on a video where they are all combined on WMM is pretty much impossible. The audio software you would need would probably be fairly high spec, I'm no expert but I know separating audio isn't as easy it looks in the movies.

Edit: You could start with something like Format Factory from FileHippo, it will convert whatever the video format is into pretty much any audio format you might need, that way at least you have the audio as a separate file.

Thanks for the advice, I'll have to give it a look into when I can.

Its not that Movie Maker is shit, its just not an audio programme. MM is designed for making basic videos not cleaning up audio files and its still one of the best free film programmes out there.

Edit @Bane_of_Kings, you could also give Audacity a go, it might be able to do what you want although personally I hate the programme.

you can also just find someone who knows how to properly edit the audio files. If you want to get the job done badly enough, post something on craigslist or whatnot.
