Default Would You Put Your Pet's Welfare Above a Stranger's?

I was playing with my cats this morning when the postman leant on the doorbell, causing them to become skittish. When I answered the door the package was not even for this address.

For a moment I felt as angry that he had bothered my cats as if he had hurt me personally. While I almost immediately dismissed it as an honest mistake, it did make me wonder how far I might go to protect them and whether I would prioritise my cats over a human in dangerous situations.

When it comes to my own pets I'd have no issue putting them before a person, I prefer their company to most people anyway.

Absolutely not. i always keep a sound distance between me and any animal I can relate to. I'm simply too anthropocentric to something else.

Yes, yes I would.

over a stranger. yes.

expanding on this, how close do you have to be to someone before you don't put your pets welfare first?

It depends. Is this one of those "If your dog and some random guy on the street were falling off a cliff, who would you save" questions, then a person. Unless they were morbidly obese in which case I'd go over too.

I think people are more important, than say, various reptiles and collies I have had.

Having said that, I used to have this german shepard named max. Big, huge dog. Not the brightest, but great company. Anyway, since I crossed the road every day, and he did too (at this point in life I lived out in the country and had no electric fence) he ended up getting hit by 7 cars. He probably did thousands of dollars in damages (but no person was ever injured). He survived, though, and I let him, so maybe I would. I got treatment at the Vet's like Tim Taylor did in the emergency room.

But, as a herp fanatic, my snakes come pretty early on the priority list (well, they did before getting married). At one point I had an emerald tree boa that took me a year to hand train. I still have him, but he doesn't bite. I have never spent an entire year getting an angry person with sharp teeth to learn something, though.

So maybe I do.

I have a new theory in life - for everything - from ethics to legal cases - it is called pre-emptive self defense.

I guess I am no closer to anyone above myself and I would put my animals welfare over my own.

If they appear to be good members of society, I would have a hard decision. But I hate humans and general overpopulation so, especially in the case of chavs and really fat people, animals first.

We are over populated with animals as well though...

I would, definitely though. My dogs are my kids.

Strange, but not a Stranger.
