Please do not take offence at this, but this is often the worst thing you can say to someone who genuinely suffers from depression (as opposed to the "I'm having a bad day" or "I'm feeling a bit glum" depression, Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain, not a mood).
I myself suffer from depression (something called RED (Recurring endogenous depression), but this is Gothics 'story' not mine,) and the worst thing someone can say to you is:
"Cheer up! Always look on the brightside! What have you got to be depressed about?"
