age off sigmar

I notice that this section of the forum is pretty quiet. I mean really quiet. Anyway, I don't really know much about War hammer fantasy compared to War hammer 40 k fantasy.

From what I gather GW decided to add Age of Sigmar or change it up because to improve sales or to answer to fans that wanted something like this.

Is this a good thing for warhammer fantasy? And can someone who knows better please explain to me where did the Army of Sigmar come from?
From what I understand Sigmar just got up and left and disappear so why not just return as Sigmar but instead you got these giant Space marine look-alike knights instead.

Are the Knights of Sigmar that strong? I mean are they stronger than let say a Space Marine?
