Plus1Jeremy I'd drop the heavy weapon teams from your squads, save maybe the CCS. While the weapons are useful, they're hobbling those squads' ability to stay versatile and mobile.

If you need the heavy weapons, drop two vet squads for a bare-bones platoon (special weapons on the PCS) and load up on HWS. Or try scout sentinels. Sure, they die fast, but at 35 points who cares? It's more targets for your opponent to have to split fire over, and they can tie up assaulters for a round before they reach your main line.

The russes are good until he assaults them, since he'll be swinging at the rear armor. An alternative would be medusas or (if you don't mind squadroning your vendettas) bane wolfs. For medusas, skip the bastion breacher shells; AP2 will deal with termies just fine. For bane wolfs, try them in reserve. Tie up an attacker with infantry, then roll those in and pick up the whole squad.

Here's an idea of what I mean:

HEADQUARTERS
CCS w/ Astropath, Lascannon, x2 Plasma Guns 95pts

ELITES
Marbo 65pts

TROOPS
x2 Vet Squad w/ 3 Meltaguns 100pts

Infantry Platoon
- PCS w/ 4 Plasma Guns 90pts
- x2 Infantry Squads 100pts
- HWS w/ 3 Lascannons 105pts
- x2 HWS w/ 3 Autocannons 75pts

FAST ATTACK
x3 Vendetta 390pts

HEAVY SUPPORT
x2 Medusas 170pts

It's less heavy support, but you don't need the big guns with all the HWS. If the Medusas don't suit you, you can use Bane Wolfs or turn the lascannon HWS into another autocannon and use two Russes instead.

HOBO Real quick I'll just say that even though you changed the Russes, both of those builds are perfect for the new 'heavy' ruling that now exists.

davespil I run Plasma guns because they give more shots/range and still insta-kill every troop and work well against light vehicles. Lascannons can kill 1 Marine or 1 tank...

I may switch up my autocannons to missile launchers but I like having two shots as opposed to one.

I run my infantry squads with PCS w/ autocannon, 2 IS with autocannon, and 2-4 HWS with autocannons. But then never acomplish much. My better equiped vets always kill more and are better shots.

I think I might look into other Leman Russ variants and try them out, but I will not drop my vet squads or Marbo to do it. Two Exicutioners with Plasma side sponsons costs more then 3 LRBT but gives a lot more fire power so I'll ues them next time. Had to switch one of my lascannons to a missile launcher.

Marbo is better against non-horde enemies. He can kill a squad of MEQs (and I've done it several times), not a 30 man squad of ork boys though. I put him where I need him and he usually comes through for me, and if not he's only 65 points. He can also take out tanks or artillery. He is an awesome unit if you know what your doing.

The Sullen One As your list stands, it's not bad. The Vendettas are a good solid choice and should bag some Rhinos in the first couple of turns. The Melta vets are a good choice as well, but get rid of the Lascannons. They can only kill one marine per turn and are far too expensive as a consequence. As for the Plasma vets, I'd just give them Meltas if they're going to be dropping from the Vendettas, as increased range doesn't matter and they won't blow up in your face. As a plus the extra strength will hurt the DP more. Drop the Autocannons from those Vets too.

I don't know if this list is based on what you have, but it needs some work. If your friend is running all the things you've listed in a 1'500 pt CSM army then it doesn't seem he's doing much else besides charging in and hoping for the best. Why aren't you're platoons doing anything but dying? Are they too small, too ill-equipped?

I run a small platoon, twenty-five men, a Commissar and three autocannons. It's cheap and cheerful and tends to bag a few transports before being butchered. But that its job, to get killed so my Veterans can get to their targets unmolested. Its also a good place to park those autocannons and Lascannons to take full advantage of their range.

Platoons serve a useful purpose here, namely they give him something to charge, potentially exposing the weaker areas of his army in his headlong rush to slaughter you. Equipped with heavy guns you can whittle down his units before closing the trap and sending the Vets in to attack the Chaos rear. If you drop one of the Vet squads and add in all the points saved from the changes suggested above, as well as those of Marbo, who will do little against non-horde armies, you've got enough for a decent sized platoon along with some Leman Russ Demolishers or Executioners to take out the Terminators as well as the Plague Marines and Berserkers.

1500 Points All Comers

Got into it with Chaos SMs last night and now back to the drawing board. My buddy has a great list that I have yet to beat with termies, plague, and beserker Marines. Everything in a Rhino and come straight at me lead with a DP with wings. This is what I've come up with:

HEADQUARTERS
CCS w/ Astropath, Lascannon, Sniper Rifle 95pts

ELITES
Marbo 65pts

TROOPS
Vet Squad w/ 3 Plasmaguns and Autocannon 125pts

Vet Squad w/ 3 Plasmaguns and Autocannon 125pts

Vet Squad w/ 3 Meltaguns and Lascannon 120pts

Vet Squad w/ 3 Meltaguns and Lascannon 120pts

FAST ATTACK
Vendetta 130pts

Vendetta 130pts

Vendetta 130pts

HEAVY SUPPORT
Leman Russ Battle Tank 150pts

Leman Russ Battle Tank 150pts

Leman Russ Battle Tank 150pts

My Infantry Platoons tend to do nothing but provide kill points to my enemy. I found that strafing in with my Vendettas and dropping off Vets tends to be very effective. The vets with melta/lascannon go after vehicles the vendettas couldn't kill and the plasma/autocannon vets go after troops. The leman russ attack whatever they can as they're a versatile unit. This list is more geared toward MEQ and TEQ armies then swarm armies.
