|LordOfAbsolution||both sounds like interesting ways to do it, I'll definitely try them out. I'll find some cloaks about somewhere to try it out before I move straight to the Rangers, which while I'm typing this just realised I have like a dozen of so unpainted LoTR wood elves which I can use so yeah definitely try some different things out on them first. Thanks for the advice.|

Base coat the cloak with a dark colour, I would go with a darkish grey as a neutral colour to start with, give it a wash of Badab black or equivalent, trying to keep the wash in the recesses.
Now for the shimmer, start with one colour and pick an area, looking at highlights, thin the paint LOTS! You want to be painting with glazes for this to work and be prepared for a long haul. Glaze towards the highlight area, this will take many many coats, but keep going until you achieve a good blend from the dark grey to the bright colour. Once you're happy with the blend start with the next colour, something that stands out but doesn't clash too much with the first shimmer colour. Start about two thirds of the way into your first blend and repeat the process, just in a smaller area. Finally, add a spot of bleached bone (or equivalent) and go for on last bash at glazing for your highlight, this should be just on the sharpest edge of the highlight. Then hit the very edge with a super thin highlight of skull white. Repeat for the other highlight areas, check the effect and maybe finish with a gloss varnish (I'm not sure you'll need it but it could look good)
I hope that helps.

|TattooedGreenMan||I would base coat it wih a mithril and then thin the paints way thin and paint your camo pattern over it and the methril will come through as a shimmer effect. Or use metalic colors in a camo pattern. Oh yeah hit it with a coat of ard coat. And then a coating of mat finish to ease down the shiny of the ard coat.|

Eldar Pathfinder Shimmer cloak (ideas)
hey guys, question for all the painters out there I've recently stripped my Rangers to paint them up in my new craftworld colours, I'm having the normal colours on the armour but i want the cloak and rifle to look dark. On the cloak I don't want a normal camo scheme for it, Eldar should have something that surpasses what we think of camo today... SO, I'm looking for a shimmer effect to put on the cloak using either grey/purple/blue/green (maybe not all of them together), I want the cloak to give the illusion that it could shimmer and bend the light that touches it to obscure the rangers from view.
I have some rough ideas of how to do it but I can't think of anyway of how to achieve that type of effect on the cloaks (I'm sure it's possible though). so if anyone has any idea of how to end up with that type of effect, or any links that can direct my towards a tutorial I would be very grateful.
... on a side note, paints wise I have access to quiet a few Vallejo Model colour, and every Game colour in their range if that helps picking colours/shades/whatever.
