I currently play homebrew wargames, but in the past I enjoyed the original Necromunda, and 2nd edition 40K. I also plan to try 8th edition, because 3rd through 7th was not my cup of tea.
I prefer skirmish games, those are more immersive for me, and I like the role-playing aspects of old-shool games like the original Rogue Trader (although I never got to play the system). We often mix board games into our games, like Rum & Bones, or Massive Darkness. The Space Crusade board game was what got me into the hobby, and I still find the game great.
I mostly paint scenery nowadays, as I have my armies already painted, but there's always ways to improve the terrain we play on. My gaming buddies don't mind using proxies, so I don't need to buy and paint new models to include new characters in the games, and I have plenty of old ones.
My favourite 40K army is Imperial Guard, but I collect anything related to games, so I have Space Marines, Chaos Marines, Tyranids, Tau, Eldar, a small army of Necrons and a couple of Orks too. Those are also good to lend to players who don't have their own armies, so I have opponents to play against.
