Default LotD Space Marine Army

Is it legal for me to paint up some black space marines and proxy in the LotD rules? Would this be a good idea?

Well first of all, welcome?

You could theoretically paint up some models in neon pink and exchanged their heads for unicorns and still call them LotD if your opponent agrees - I don't think black marines would be too much of a stretch, as long as you put some decent effort into making them look good. This wouldn't be a bad idea either, especially because if you don't like the way they play you can just use them as normal marines afterwards.

If you go down to the woods today, be wary

Now there is an idea worth exploring

Yes black marines proxiying as LotD is fine. Its not stricly required to get LotD models. I would thinka s long as they are different to your regular marines is should be fine. But as with all things you do need to explain this to your opponent.

Your toast has been burnt and no amount of scraping will get rid of the black bits.

Considering the price of the LotD models, I wouldn't see a problem. So long as your paint job makes it clear they are LotD, or at least separates them from the rest of your army, you should be fine. An easy way to distinguish them would be do head swaps for skulls from some of the various skeleton kits, easily available from a bits site. Cheap but effective.

Have you considered painting flames on them - it's a good way to make them stand out as LOTD, and everything looks better with flames on. EVERYTHING.

If you want some tips on painting fire i would be happy to advise

An alternative is to try and get hold of the CSM bezerker skull helms and use those with the bunny ears removed. It is also not hard to graft a plastic skull onto the front of a sm helm with a bit of green stuff. Welcome to heresy online.
