Essential tools for the beginner

Alas, I think I've decided on building a Grey Knights army and am looking forward to reading more and learning more and getting my first units and painting and everything else. I have appreciated the great input here thus far and thought I'd hit you all up again.

Because I'm a beginner, and because I'm going to build a GK army rather than start with the DV box, I'd like to get a better feel for the tools of the trade that I need to put on my shopping list in order to enjoy my gaming experience. I'd love to know the items you feel are absolute necessities, as well as items you think are worth the expense because of the increased ease of running/playing a game, etc. Thanks for the input in advance!

Depends on what section of the hobby you are looking for. On the aspect of the game itself I would recomend a templete set, objective markers, and dice. The new set of dice from GW does come with a set of objective markers (little servo skulls). You will also need a tape measure and probably more dice (make sure your set has a scatter die).

For the army you need the codex(duh) but I have never played GK so not 100% on which models will be good, but I know the GK termi box can set up a squad of purifiers as well so that may be worth a look.:victory:

Depending on the size of force you want an army bag is very useful. If you get one with the pluck out pieces you can make the sizes you need for your guys.

For the painting side you will want at least a standerd size brush, a fine detail brush, and a drybrush. Also take a look at what paints you want to use. If your local game store has a painting area ask if they ever have painting days so you can talk to others about diffrent styles of painting.

If you want to convert your models a razor saw, pin drill, and a set of green stuff can get you going pretty well.:eek:k:

All in all there is alot of diffrent things that can be picked up and lots of things to get excited for, just remember that this game is best as a long term commitment which can give you years to decades of use out of some of those tools. Also you never know when you may get a bit of extra cash for the game:santa:

Welcome to Heresy Online.

Funny you should ask about tools, I have started working on a set of small articles aimed at people who have just picked up the hobby.

I was going to wait to post them until I had done a whole set but now Iv'e seen somebody ask I have posted the first one.

Here is the a link to a guide on collecting up a basic tool kit for modelling.

I'd like to pick up a good set of dice that includes a scatter die. I saw a post or two somewhere that the GW dice were not top quality because they had air bubbles in them (thus affecting the randomness of the roll). Are there any other recommendations for dice and where to get them? I really need to look at the rulebook to get a better understanding of the game mechanics, but I'd appreciate you cluing me in on how many dice (and what type) a guy should have in his arsenal.

You know the dice set that has lots of small dice in a bigger one? If so, those usually contain a scatter, use that as a starter set for dice, then get better ones, but keep the scatter.
For other tools, a good pair of plastic cutters and a sharp hobby knife is a must, use a film canister for the old blades, just cut a slot in the top, an use a label, once thought it was my brush rinser, byebye good brush!

Dice are a very complex issue. You'r best bet if you want high quality dice are to find non-drilled casino dice because they are machined and not molded. This means there are no air bubbles or irregularities and the edges are crisp instead of round. They are however fairly expensive. GW dice are just fine but as you get more into playing you may feel that the time will come to upgrade.

If you check eBay you can usually find scatter dice and many others for good prices. You may still be able to find the old starter set Black Reach stuff which had dice and templates... the new one does as well I think.

I've got a A Gregor Eisenhorn Inquisitor, a dreadknight, a land raider, a chimera, terminators, grey knights , and the venerable dreadnought. For other games, I have the daemon host, and henchmen, (as they die instead of the inquisitor taking a wound) as well as death cult assassins. At this point, I would add more terminators (they are troops choices) and a rhino or razorback. Then I might add one more dreadknight. I bow to those who might have more experience.
