Default Painting Question

Just a quick question for all of the painters out there. I am starting to paint my imperial guarsmen and was wondering which primer, chaos black or skull white, to use. I am going to be painting them in dessert/ash waste scheme and wanted to make sure I get the right primer.

It only really makes a slight difference in the final effect, if any. A lot of people find black easier to paint on, though, so if you're starting out it's probably a good bet, especially if you're not using any yellow/bright green that would be difficult to paint over black. 0905

As lastdaysofhumanity mentioned the real difference is in the final tone of the product. If you paint over black the tones will be darker and more muted. On white the opposite.

What colours do you plan to paint your IG. That will probably help decide which is better to basecoat with.

i would suggest black... IMO i have found it easier to work dark to light than reverse. If you want a rugged look as well black is the way to go.

Um... Desert or Ash waste scheme... How about brown or grey primer, for an ash wasteland, grey primer can easily save you several steps later on.

Gray is the way to go. It can go darker without a problem and it can go lighter without a ton of layers.

Another option that I use on my guardsmen is to prime black and then paint Codex Grey on all cloth and skin and then paint the model in the colors I want.
It leaves the armor with that nice dark tone, but makes skin and cloth brighter and "pop" a little bit more.
Also, Codex Grey is easier to paint the lighter colors on so I need less layers of paint to do my cloth.

I would recommend a Grey primer - it's great for building up an intermediate colour from.

Also you will find that the minis are actually primed, whereas GW skull white/chaos black sprays aren't primers at all, they are basecoats.

Need an army painting?

if your working with yellows and stuff I would most likely suggest white.
