I would strongly advice againts spraying the models when they are still sprued... as this will result in you getting many areas not sprayed when you take them off, ergo, more work when you must paint those areas specifically.
So, take them from sprues, clean em, get away mouldlines, THEN spray it :D
As for primer, I absolutely think it is necessary.
And also that almost any flat spray works nicely.
Just never buy GW's grey spray... as it makes one hell of alot of blotches. xD

I like Armory. Its only about 6 bucks and works great.

I think priming is a necessity, though not always with GW primers. As far as technique, I'd say glue your models together, then prime; that way it's easy to make sure all visible areas are primed so you don't waste primer on areas nobody's ever gonna see.
