I find that craft paints work just fine. No need to get too pricey.

I use GW paints but I would like to try some others out, my local independent sells Tamiya so I will give them a go, Valejo also seem to get a lot of good press but I can't find them anywhere. They do sell a small range in Hobby Craft now but they are for Flames Of War and there are only so many shades of green and grey I will ever need.
I also really can't get on with the new washes so I will be investing in some Windsor & Newton inks soon.

While we're on the subject, does anyone have a good brand of spray primer that they can recommend? Gw's stuff works, but it's way too expensive, and I'm hesitant to buy a new spray primer blindly.
Armory Primer is good stuff! Also much cheaper then GW.

I like to use Krylon flat black as a primer, sometimes. It's like, somewhere like $5 a can...

Mine is mainly Games Workshop at the minute but thats because they are cheap for me. I Have tried a few Valejo and i like them, going to be getting some more soon. Hell even the eavy metal team in white dwarf use some Valejo paints, if you look at apc of one painting in white dwarf you can see a few pots sticking out behind all the citadel ones.

I use mainly GW paints; I'm a big fan of the foundation and washes. I also use some Vallejo Model Colours however. Stuff like their metallic medium, matt medium and shades in between some of the Games Workshop ones. They're 50p a pot cheaper here too, unless I buy some from bon_jovi (wargamesempire) and then the Games Workshop ones are the same price
