Default Level of conversion difficulty???

Like i've mentioned in prior threads im starting 40 k with the dark vengeance kit, which i'm sure will keep me busy for a bit, but my question pertains to when i wish to grow my forces. Let's say I buy the a kit that comes with some vehicles, more marines, etc. Ive seen they have conversion sheets in them but how far does that really go? Every kit looks like ultra marines, are the shoulder pads puffed out with their emblem or is it just an example for packaging purposes? Thanks, and sorry for my noobie ignorance lol

Ultramarines are just the default GW use for displaying of painted models but the kits aren't ultramarine specific. The shoulder pads that you get In the kits are blank and they supply decals for a variety of chapters. The dark vengeance set is an exception as they are specifically Dark Angles and therefore come with Dark Angles shoulder pads. GW do sell upgrade kits for a variety of chapter which have chapter specific shoulder pads and other bits and pieces. It is worth noting that depending on the chapter you are creating not all kits will be available to your army eg if you are doing Dark Angles then you can't field Storm Ravens, Storm Talons, Hunter/Stalkers etc. Study your codex before you commit to purchase.

Right on. So,there are certain units some chapters cannot use? I've seen codexes online, so it's kind of like a class specific handbook from dungeons and dragons?

That's a reasonable analogy. What chapter are you going to build?

I was wanting to go with dark angels due to having them from the get go with this dark vengeance set and digging what I've read about them. But now I may want to do some more research, before spending my money on something I may not be as into i reckon.

What kits really interest you? Dark Angels do miss out on some vehicles but they also get some unique ones that only they can use. Nephilim fighter and a heavy support vengeance speeder. Each chapter also has its own special characters that are also worth looking at to see what appeals

I think that the dreadnought kits i've seen look pretty cool. The rhinos and what not. I think I like the bike aspect of what came in my kit. Ithink they look pretty cool. and when it comes to the codexes and editions, do people usually switch over or is it kind of like dungeons and dragons in the aspect that you'll meet mother flippers out there who still play 2nd edition?

People always update to the new edition as soon as it comes out. A new codex supersedes the old one becoming the only legitimate rules set. Dreadnaughts, rhinos, bikes are all standard units available to all chapters. If you like bikes Dark Angles are a good choice due to the Ravenwing. It's possible to build an entire army around bike units.

As mentioned the dark vengeance marines are the only ones with sculpted shoulder pads and therefore specific to Dark Angels. All other standard marines are just ultramarines for the studio scheme. if you are going specifically DA then it may be worth looking up the codex to find the units. If it is just to know which models the faction uses, then just look under dark angels on the 40k section of the GW website and that will list everything they take. You can buy specific conversion packs that come with nice chapter specific heads and other bits.

If there is a normal marines unit that dark angels don't get access to, such as some of the vehicles, there is nothing stopping you allying in a standard marines detachment which are counts as Dark Angels. As all imperium armies are battle brothers it won't have much affect on your army construction, though you would need to get the adeptus astartes codex as well as dark angels to do that.

Me: To be honest im amazed there isn't a chaos god of not revising or at least chaos god of procrastination

MidnightSun: There will be, when enough people do it. Y'know when the Eldar were all engaging in their hedonism and Slaanesh ripped open the Eye of Terror with his creation? Slaanesh will have NOTHING on the God of Procrastination, and his vile minions will carve the galaxy asunder in a thousand year reign of blood.... Tomorrow

Theres a lot more to this than I thought. I'd like to get some of my friends into playing. There are a couple hobby/ comic shops where i work about 20 miles away i may stop at and have a chat. I"m more of a hands on learner if that makes any sense.
