This will affect all schemes by making them darker. A white primer will make all schemes lighter.

Of course, the primer could be considered part of the scheme as it affects tone pretty heavily. As an example, prime an army dark-grey and then spray it red and you'll get a good colour for Blood Ravens. Prime them white and then spray it red and you're looking at Blood Angels.

This is my first attempt at a model, think it needs more though.

Overall it looks like a good start, the two colors you've chosen work very well. I'd add teeth and eye color in addition to finishing the gun, as well as a different color for the muscles and ligaments that are showing through and under the yellow-ish carapace, just because it looks a bit dull right now.

By ligaments do you mean those little lines on the arms? What should I do for the gun, use a more contrasting colour? I originally did it Seraphim Sepia over white with a highlight of Ushabti bone. Do you mean the under side bone ribs need to be coloured differently as well?

Yes, when I said muscles/ligaments I meant the parts that are sticking out. As for the gun, using that blue color as the dominant tone wouldn't hurt, I'd try that first.

So "The Fang" for the gun, and black for the muscles/ligaments?

Black or a dark red, either one would work well! Just keep it consistent

Ok, so I'll go with black for the ligaments. Definitely the fang for the gun though?

I think that would help tie it together, yes. If you're worried about the blue being too dominant than keep it on the sections that look like the carapace the gaunt has on his back, like the piece on top of the barrel.
