Default Best Red Paint?

well after deciding to remake my whole blood angel's army (this means air brushing included ya!) I can't find a nice red since the GW paints just give such a dull non-rich like to marine armor........So i am looking for suggestions guys of dark rich reds like this

http://www.coolminiornot.com/263347?browseid=602944

If anyone knows what brand\color that guy used....you will get some major rep!

Thanks

Azk

That red is the result of painstaking blending and mixing, not any single colour. It will be impossible to replicate it in a single coat of any brand's red.

My best bet would be to start off with a mix of blood and scab red then blend up from there. Given the salmon pink esque highlight's you'd want to work some whites, beiges and oranges into the top highlights. The shaded areas are still a very rich red so it's likely he used mixed purple glazes to darken it without disfiguring the red.

Here's a tutorial for red that i've used to great effect myself. It's not the exact shade of your example bit it's close and more importantly gives you the theory and process of achieving good reds. You can build on what he does to create your own shades by altering the colours and mix quantities you use.

El, look at my Warriors of Chaos. I hit a fairly nice deep red using GW paints on them.

the vajello reds work much MUCH better for my WoC ive been working with them abit lately as a kind of turn around. try them. get the mirrors for Red Gore and blood red for base and highlighting.

GW foundation mech red is nice for the undercoat after black to help tone the red and their new washes work great still too, the fast drying is good for washes.

edit: Vajello paints on my wet palette also last over 24 hours without any issues, for greens, reds and blues at the very least (all which I moved to Vajello recently)

yeah I know, use Mech red for the air brush, then hand layer on the gore equivilant, putting blood equiv and chaos black at the top and bottem, blend the between parts with drybrushing and red washes, then highlight with blood after, should turn into a very nice red. I dont think you will get a nice rich red with just airbrushing dude.

Vallejo (WTF is vajello? sounds like a naughty gelatin snack!) Black Red is a good starting point for a rich red.

Strange, but not a Stranger.
