Default Characters for my DIY Marines

so 6th has gotten me re-interested in the fluff of my chapter (see sig for an ancient thread about them if you want )

now i have talked to my friend "Archon Dan" about these guys and we feel that they are at least balanced enough to playtest with between us...and hopefully add in more players for a campaign.

so i have 3 characters, the chapter master, chief librarian, and a captain.

unfortunately i do not have any fluff attached to this tread (and the fluff in the sig has changed enough over time that it is prolly due for a restart)

Quote:
Chapter Master Estever pts 275...ish

WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv
7 5 5 4 4 5 5 10 2+

Wargear

Terminator Armor, Iron Halo, Nimravidae Pattern Combi-Bolter, Jaws of Vigour, Orbital Bombardment

Jaws of Vigor: an AP4 chainsword/evisorator, contains the Rending, Fleshbane, and Shread USRs.

Nimravidae Pattern Combi-Bolter: a combi-bolter that exceeds the rate of fire than a standard storm bolter, 24" S4 AP5 Assault 3 Twin-Linked

Special Rules

ATSKNF, IC, Fear, Rage, Rampage, Furious Charge, counter attack, adamantium will, It will not Die, Company Tactics, the Master's Chosen

Company Tactics; units exchange combat tactics for rampage

The Master's Chosen; the unit that Estever is deployed with gain the Rage, FC, and Counter attack rule as long as Estever remains with the unit.
this guy was pretty much a spawning of "whats all the cool USRs that i havent seen yet" all added together.

Chief Librarian Athaem 185 pts

WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv
5 4 4 4 2 4 2 10 3+/5++

Wargear
Power Armor, Frag & Krak Grenades, MC Plasma Pistol, Staff of Sight, Armor of Truth

Staff of Sight; makes Athaem Mastery Level 3, and allows him to know how to use 4 powers (see below), is also an AP3 Force Maul

Armor of Truth; a suit of Power armor that combines a psychic hood and an ancient Iron Halo - grants Athaem a 5+ invul save.

Special Rules
Living Ancient - Athaem can take a personal honor guard; the honor guard uses the rules of a Tactical Squad that cannot increase its number, nor take any upgrades.

However all models in the unit are Psychers and also carry force weapons (with ML1 and each can cast either The Avenger or Smite (C:SM) and has the FNP USR for an additional 150 points.

Company Tactics - all units in the army that contain Athaem gain a D6 scout move following the rules of "Princeps of Deceit" (except the number of units limited)

PSychic powers
smite, Terrify, Warp Speed, Telekine Dome
this guy was the first i created, and is prolly the most balanced of the three at first glance.

Captain Isdan 225 pts

WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv
7 5 4(5) 4(5) 4 5(3) 3 10 2+

Wargear

Artificer Armor, Frag & Krak Grenades, Storm Shield, Storm Bolter, The Beheader, Iron Halo, Teleport Homer

The Beheader: a relic of the chapter that doubles the users strength at a cost of halving the users Initiative (rounding up). is an AP2 weapon.

Special Rules

ATSKNF, IC, Terminator Assault, Heir Apparent, Company Tactics, Bionicized

Terminator Assault; Allows 1/2 of the armies terminator units to DS on turn one (basically use the Drop Pod Rules for terminator units)

Company Tactics; all units in an army with Isdan replace Combat Tactics for the Crusader and Tank Hunter USRs.

Heirr Apparent; Eternal Warrior

Bionicized; after extensive repairs to his body Isdan is S5 & T5 and should be mounted on a 40mm base.
ya, this guy is just for fun, but with his wargear you simply use the stat line within the parenthesis.

----

in general most of the USRs and special equipment i would like to keep, perhaps edit or omit some, but in general im trying to nail down the points and i could use lots of help on that front.

Isdan is worth at least 350 points. See: Any other space marine with a 2+ save and Eternal Warrior -- and he goes above and beyond that, with S10, T5, I2, AP2...

The first guy is also horrifically underpriced. Holy shit, look at all those USRs as well as his hulk-esque statline. This looks like something Matt Ward would make.

so perhaps just giving him a relic blade instead would be better.

also isdan is more to be my answer for Lysander, who only comes in at a cool 200pts, but if i took away Bionicized, and simply changed The Beheader into an axe relic blade. would that be more reasonable for his current point value?

ya, he is. i was trying to put forth the feeling that once he enters the field of battle he turns into a blood soaked killing machine. but i was trying to make him roughly 300 points. i under costed him for the OP simply because i know that even at 300 he would still be op (i need the most help with him)

would removing Rage, Furious Charge, Counter Attack, and Adamantium Will help a lot with that, or would just removing It Will Not Die make it feel more balanced?

----

no one has mentioned Athaem in a post yet, does every one find him at least better than the others? (since he is a stock libby stat-line)

I also play tested him yesterday against some Necrons he seemed to have been ok at the price (could also be deducted 10 pts i think), i did not use his "honor guard" in the game.

So I read your fluff and picked up these key points:

-Very independent
-Loyal to the Emperor rather than a Primarch
-Estever-specializes in hit-and-run tactics
-Athaem-reliable, well trained
-Isdan-siege specialist

I'm not really sure what their specialty is as a chapter though. Maybe you could elaborate. That would help with developing rules. As for the comments below, they are blunt for the sake of simplicity, not rude-ness.

Estever

Statline:

He should be S4, W3, and A4. Nothing about his fluff indicates he's a super marine

Wargear:

I would drop Fleshbane. That tends to indicate more of a Poison and since Shread already lets you re-roll failed to wound, its a bit redundant. I would make it AP3 though.

Nimravidae looks fine.

Special Rules:

Drop Fear, Rampage, Counter Attack, and It will not die. He's a hit and run specialist. The above rules don't really represent that. I would give him...wait for it...hit and run! I would give him Infiltrate and Move Through Cover.

Company Tactics. Again the Rampage thing doesn't make much sense. This one is hard to nail down without knowing the 'style' of your chapter.

Master's Chosen. Drop Rage and Counter attack. I would say something like, Estever typically deploys with a squad of his most chosen warriors. These warriors are equipped with only the best weapons from the Panther armory. The unit that Estever is deployed with (note: not joined) gains +1WS as well as the Shred special rule to represent their powerful weapons.

Points as you have him: 300+

Athaem

Statline: Looks fine

Wargear:

Staff of Sight. The Mastery Level and knowing 4 powers is pushing it (think Ahriman) but ok maybe he's trained so long and that's why. I would keep it AP4 like the power maul in the BRB though.

Armor of Truth. Fine

Living Ancient- Way OP and doesn't make much sense. Why do they have Feel no Pain? Why are they all psykers with force weapons and why can they all cast psychic powers when no other squad of psykers in the game can do that? Also why are they no more expensive than a normal tac squad?! I would change this rule completely (I know you said not to, but it makes no sense to me). Since he is the most reliable Librarian ever, I would make this rule something like, Athaem has been studying the psyker arts for far longer than any Librarian in the Panther Chapter. He may reroll a single psychic test once per game, but must keep the results of the second roll. It's not nearly as powerful a rule as your original, but remember, he's only 185 points which pretty much covers the ML 3 and not much more.

Company Tactics. I also don't get this. He's a combat Librarian, why's he redeploying units? Again, hard to work this rule without a Chapter overview.

Psychic Powers: Sure.

Points after edit: 185

Points as you have him: 285+

Isdan

Your fluff indicates that he's a siege specialist, but your rules indicate that he's a combat beast along the lines of a World Eater. I'm going to tweak according to the siege specialist aspect.

Statline: I think you know what's coming here. WS5 BS5 S4 T4 W3 I5 A3 Ld10

Wargear:

The Beheader. Not a fan. Again it sounds more of a combat specialist thing. I picture most Siege guys with a big hammer. I would give him a Thunder hammer. It also goes nicely with his storm shield You could give it armorbane though to represent its ability to tear down walls and what not.

Special Rules:

Terminator Assault. No. It's way too good. Not many armies are equipped to deal with mass terminators deep striking normally. How are they going to handle half of the units DSing turn 1 automatically? There's a reason terminators aren't allowed in drop pods. It's also not related whatsoever to being a siege specialist. I would drop this rule completely and come up with something new.

Perhaps, something like Isdan and any unit he has joined add +1 to the damage table when shooting or attacking buildings. They also gain Move Through Cover (Ruins)

In addition, Isdan is an expert at picking out the weaknesses in enemy fortifications. He may reduce the cover save of one building or fortification on the battlefield by 1 points. So an Aegis defense line would be reduced from a 4+ cover save to a 5+ cover save (3+ for going to ground).

Company Tactics.Again

Heir Apparent. Not sure what this does.

Bionicized. It's fine.

Points after edits: 175

Points as you have him: 300+

Chaos Space Marines: Stay Spikey

Codex: The Ascended (Malice) WIP
