Knights of Illustro
Compassion is reserved for servants of the Emperor: aliens deserve only our scorn.
~ Inquisitor Czevak, Teachings on the Unholy
By thy colour will he know thee,
By thy banners will he fear thee,
By thy standard will he dread thee,
Cry Marine, and let slip the weapons of war.
Chapter Name: Knights of Illustro
Recruiting World: Illustro - Feudal World
Fortress Monastery (Battle-Barge): Formerly The Sanctus Ira in close orbit around Illustro, currently The Volatilis Nex.
Modus Operandi: A chapter true to the principles of Roboute Guilliman, the Knights of Illustro are highly flexible, relying on fluid use of tactical squads with varied support-units as the situation demands.
Structure: Following the destruction of their monastery-ship and the complete obliteration of all but the 1st company the Knights of Illustro effectively operate as a veteran single company chapter, frequently deploying en-masse, or spear-heading Imperial forces requisitioned by Adolphus Friedmann. Nowadays the chapter reside upon the Volatilis Nex, formerly Captain Arnulf’s flagship battlebarge.
History: Founded in M36, their librarians commonly agreed that the chapter came from Ultramarine stock, though the facts have been lost to time. Deep in the fringes of the Ultima Segemntum, the Knights home-world of Illustro is a technologically backwards planet where the Imperial Truth and the Emperor are distant, vague concepts. With one large, war torn continent shared by a multitude of feudal states Illustro is an ideal proving ground for an Astarte’s Chapter. The Chapter-Master of the Knights Is the Imperial Governor of the world, though they have always taken the hands off approach to its governing, only coming down to the planet’s surface when the balance of power shifts or when signs of heretics and mutations show themselves. Every Astarte warrior is a native of Illustro and thus unsurprisingly the culture of the feudal world is, to an extent, the culture of the chapter.
Over their long history the Knights of Illustro have fought many of the Imperium’s worst foes, from rampaging Ork Waaaghs and Hud infestations to questing tendrils of Hive Fleet Kraken and Jormungandr.
Though they had suffered setbacks and defeats before in their campaigns and wars, the worst blow to the Chapter came in the form of Craftworld Iybraesil. Over the course of several years many of the Chapter’s strike-cruisers were beset by Eldar pirates, becoming an almost constant and deadly threat whenever the chapter ventured abroad. None could shed any light on the actions of the xenos, for the Eldar are known for their capricious and random acts of destruction. Eventually and in typically rapid and phantom fashion, a sizable fleet of Eldar ships appeared in-system, rapidly closing on Illustro. Caught woefully unprepared the vastly diminished chapter-fleet was crippled and destroyed by waves of bombers and the Pulsar Lances of the xeno’s cruisers. Showing no interest in the planet itself the fleet turned its attention to the crippled and wounded Sanctus Ira. In somewhat untypical Eldar fashion they boarded the Fortress Monastery with a sizable force, securing key-sections within whilst carefully combing the vast ship for something. Naturally the Eldar met stiff resistance ship wide as the surviving knights rallied and sought to reclaim their flagship and home. Striking at the bridge, the marines reclaimed and held the vital point long enough for Lord Hrothgarr’s personal astropath to contact the Volatilis Nex and recall the 1st Company.
Managing to stall the Eldar for almost two-days, due in part to the Praetorian’s heroic defence of the vaults, victory seemed close when the Volatilis Nex jumped into the system accompanied by a modest fleet of Imperial Warships. Their time run-out and whatever they had come for still unfound, the Iybraesil Eldar seemingly abandoned their mission and began withdrawing. Determined to exact their just revenge, the Chapter-Lord, accompanied by the remnant of his Praetorians and the old-one Erebus took a Thunderhawk, seeking to rendezvous with the newly arrived fleet and give-chase. As the gunship sped away from The Sanctus Ira, the battle-barge was wracked with a series of internal detonations that gutted the ship and sent it burning into the planet below. The Eldar disappeared like a ghost fleet, leaving nothing but a graveyard of twisted metal and floating corpses in its wake.
A new path was being forged for the Knights of Illustro upon the Volatilis Nex, Captain Arnulf accompanied by an Inquisitor Lord of the Ordo Xenos met the Chapter-Master as disembarked from the Thunderhawk and the extent of the catastrophe quickly became evident. With but a single ship, one company and their gene-seed stock having been incinerated with the Sanctus Ira, the chapter would soon perish. Eager to face the end gloriously in battle with their vile Eldar foes, the Knights were given just such an opportunity by Inquisitor Adolphus Friedmann. A self proclaimed expert on the Eldar race, the Inquisitor had already been en-route to Illustro -as a ‘guest’ upon Arnulf’s ship- to seek council with its master, curious as to the recent attacks upon the Astarte’s fleet and their true purpose. Regarded as somewhat of a fanatic amongst the ranks of the Ordo Xenos, Friedmann seeks to master the Webway and its secrets for humanity. And so the Knights of Illustro pledged themselves to aid in his plight, seeing both an honourable alternative to death and a means to revenge their fallen brothers.
Now the Knights go where Adolphus Friedmann directs them, the elite of his force, carrying out the most dangerous of missions against the alien foes of the Imperium and the Ordo Xenos.
Hrothgarr – The grizzled and ancient chapter-master of the Knights of Illustro. Wisely guiding the chapter for several centuries Hrothgarr is a master-tactician and a deadly warrior. Following the destruction of the Sanctus Ira and the decimation of his chapter he vowed that he would not rest until the vile Eldar had been wiped from the face of the galaxy. Subsequently he leads his chapter with renewed fanaticism and a grim determination to restore their tarnished honour.
Praetorian Guard – Oeric, Eafa, Wulfhere, Cælin.
For a Space Marine to have become one of the Chapter’s Honour Guard is for him to have fulfilled many centuries of exceptionally courageous service. Every member of the honour guard is living exemplar of the ideals for which Guilliman intended the Space Marines to be forever known. The Praetorian Guard of The Knights of Illustro are no exception to this, each having their own long and glorious records of heroic deeds and tales. When Iybraesil’s Warp Spiders reached the cavernous chapter-vaults at the heart of the Sanctus Ira the Honour Guard sold their lives dearly to defend the chapter’s relics, barricaded behind a wall of Eldar corpses. Wave after wave of flickering, ephemeral xeno-warriors were turned back before the veterans time and time again until only four of the Illustro Guard remained.
Erebus – Venerated Dreadnaught, a valued and trusted member of the Chapter Council. He has seen several chapter-masters come and go in his life. Erebus singlehandedly held the main approach to the bridge of the Sanctus Ira for several hours, allowing the chapter’s Astropaths to successfully recall the 1st company back to Illustro and force the Eldar’s eventual retreat.
Arnulf – A veteran of a hundred battlefields and campaigns, Arnulf is the captain of the 1st company.
Penda – Apothecary of the 1st.
Hereric – This hulking warrior is the champion of the 1st company
Deximus – Veteran Sergeant of the 1st Company’s tactical dreadnaught (Terminator) squad.
Egfrid – Sergeant of the 1st company.
Sighere – Sergeant of the 1st company.
