Default Index Astartes: Phoenix Sabers

Still a work in progress. There are holes in the fluff and I'm sure in a few places it messes with the general canon (A few things non withstanding).

--------DISCLAIMER-------
THIS ARMY CONTAINS FEMALE SPACE MARINES AND MESSES WITH AN UNKNOWN PRIMARCH. IF YOU DO NOT APPROVE OF EITHER DO NOT LEAVE NEGAVTIVE COMMENTS. I DO NOT WANT A FLAME WAR.

All other feedback and constructive criticism welcome with open arms and a grain of salt.

EX-CAPTAIN NERO IGNATIUS BLOOD ANGELS 5TH COMPANY
The Phoenix Sabers were founded during the dreaded Age of Apostacy as a part of the cursed founding in M36. A direct successor to the Blood Angels, the originally named Sabers of Blood was created as an attempt to weed out the gene-curse from the Blood Angels genetic line.

After completing a Blood Quest from Chapter Master Constantine, Captain Nero Ignatius of the Blood Angels 5th company was resupplying on a small shrineworld within the veiled region, when World Eaters launched an assault to defile the planet. Battered and severely exhausted from their crusade, the World Eaters quickly overwhelmed the Loyalists, wiping the Planetary defense forces from the planet to the very last man, leaving the Blood Angels landing zone the last Imperialist stronghold on the planet.

Captain Ignatius prayed to the Emperor that he and his battle company might be able to return to Baal to see their quest finished, but as Defilers, Dreadnoughts and traitorous marines barreled down on the doors of their final bastion, Captain Ignatius was certain he had been forsaken by the Emperor. Determined to give his brothers the death they truly deserved, Captain Ignatius rallied his remaining brothers for their final stand. The Blood Angels pushed the World Eaters to the back through their defenses and charged the field.

It is not completely known what occurred during this battle. Reports state there was a blinding flash of light, incinerating many World Eaters. In the epicenter of the burning inferno stood a man in red and gold armour with wings made of fire brandishing a sword engulfed in flames. He was said to have radiated with a holy glow.

Captain Ignatius first thought it the Sanguinor coming to aid their Blood Angels to finish their crusade, but it was not. Nonetheless, inspired by the presence of the celestial saviour Captain Ignatius and his Blood Angels fought all the harder. With the help of this mysterious newcomer, the Blood Angels were able to push back the World Eaters, regaining lost ground with few losses.

When confronted about his sudden appearance and lending his aid, the Saviour said little. He had forgotten who he was and where he had come from, only that he knew deep inside himself that he had to aid the struggling Blood Angels. While the Captain himself still harbored doubts, it was at that moment when the Blood Angels began to whisper of the Saviour as a lost Primarch.

As dawn approached, the World Eater's warband attacked again. Captain Ignatius led the Blood Angels ground forces in a full counter-assault, while from above the Saviour led the remaining Blood Angels assault marines into the maelstrom of battle. Accounts report that the Saviour struck blows at speeds almost uncatchable to the eye and hurled cleansing flame from from his very hands. It would seem that with the Saviour fighting along side them, the victory would be for the Blood Angels, until disaster struck.

The World Eaters had performed a ritual and summoned forth a Daemon Prince of Khorne. It stormed the battlefield, tearing through the Blood Angel lines, heading straight for Captain Ignatius. The Saviour reacted by swooping down on his wings of fire, striking a fierce blow to the Daemon. The Daemon Prince turned his attention to the Saviour and fierce combat ensured. The Saviour battled fiercely with the Daemon Prince as combat raged on around them. Reports from the battle describe fierce clashes, bright flashes of light and waves of heat as the duel grew savage. Survivor accounts recount hearing a loud cry of pain as the large blade of the Daemon Prince found purchase in the flesh of the Saviour and cast him low.

Seeing the Saviour broken on the ground, Captain Ignatius gave in to the red thirst, charging the Daemon Prince with his blade at the ready, but Captain Ignatius was no match for such a powerful Daemon. Mere moments after engaging the Daemon in combat, Captain Ignatius found himself quickly struggling within the grasp of the Daemon as it began to crush the life out of him.

What transpires can only be considered a miracle. The Saviour, broken and bloodied rose from death, surrounded by flames. Reports say that his very eyes burned with righteous fire. With speed untraceable by even the eye of an Adeptus Astartes, the Saviour struck the Daemon over and over again until the beast released Captain Ignatius and it's body fell dead. It was at this moment when the Saviour was first referred to as the Phoenix Primarch.

With the death of the Daemon Prince, the World Eaters' assault was quickly pushed back by the remaining loyalist Blood Angels. The Saviour agreed to accompany Captain Ignatius back to Baal to meet with Chapter Master Constantine and perhaps learn more of his lost identity. Before embarking on their journey back to Baal, the Saviour planted a sword in the ground to commemorate their victory over Chaos on the shrine world.

Captain Ignatius and the Saviour conversed much on the journey back to Baal. He told the Saviour of their doomed fate and the black rage, while the Saviour told Ignatius of a golden age of technology and peace. Librarians and Codicers now believe that the Saviour was referring to a pre-heresy age under the rule of the Emperor's grace.

Feeling remorse for the fate of Captain Ignatius' Blood Angels, the Saviour created rigorous mental exercises to stabilize the Black Rage within the gene curse. It has now been proven that these exercises have saved the lives of many a Phoenix Saber.

ATMOSPHERE: HOSTILE

DOMINANT LIFEFORMS: NONE ON FILE (WIP)

Established 100 years after chapter's founding. The Phoenix Sabers attempted to establish a stable base of operations out of reach of the Ecchlesiarchy and the Inquisition. Planet Naentis in the Segmentum Obscurus was considered to be remote and barren enough away to settle.

100 years after the Phoenix Saber's fortress was established on Naentis, the Inquisition discovered the fortress location and dispatched Blood Angels and Black Templars to scour the Phoenix Sabers from the world. Hesitant to fight their Blood Angel cousins, the Phoenix Sabers were cut down easily. The Battle Barge Legendary Cuirass, flagship of the Phoenix Sabers was destroyed in the attack.

In a last act of fury, the Inquisition performed Exterminatus on the planet. Nearly 200 years after founding, the Inquisition believed the renegade chapter was wiped from the pages of history.

Legendary Cuirass MKIII - Originally a simple battle barge under command of the founder of the Phoenix Sabers Captain Nero Ignatius before leaving the chapter, the Legendary Cuirass has been destroyed and re-built two times. Still to small to be considered a space station, yet now more powerful than most ships used by their brother Space marines and the Imperial Navy. In it's third resurrection The Cuirass is an (almost) jury rigged mish-mash of an Imperial Battle Barge, Retribution-Class battleship, and Ark Mechanicus and a Desploiler class battleship. Almost completely unrecognizable from it's original battle barge form, since the addition of the ark mechanicus the Legendary Cuirass' power and void shields have allowed the chapter to survive as long as it has as threats to the chapter continue to increase.

The Legendary Cuirass contains the fortress home of the Phoenix Sabers chapter as well as a small manufactorum and apothecarium laboratory as well as natural facilities required to maintain and provide for a chapter who has been running for five millennia. There are rumours that the flagship may even house a recovered warlord class titan.

Phoenix Sabers adhere very loosely to the Codex Astartes. As Blood Angels, they do not fully follow the guidelines set by Robute Guilliman. Upon their excommunication, all ties to Imperial dogma, with the exception of respect and reverence to Sanguinius and the -EXCOMMUNICATED- Primarch were expunged from the chapter. Phoenix Sabers have no chaplains or reclusiam. After the destruction of the Legendary Cuirass MKII, much of the chapter organization had been thrown further into disarray. Though much of the basics have been maintained, the Phoenix Saber order of governance was forced to be re-structured.

Due to a lack of numbers, the Phoenix Sabers only bear six companies as opposed to the standard ten, with the sixth company being the scout company and the first company being the veterans. The fifth company is a devastator/Assault squad reserve company hybrid, leaving companies one through four as full battle companies.

Company organization is as follows:
1st Company Captain - Ryder Vipus - "Flaming Blades"
2nd Company Captain - Ruthe Victoria - "Swords of Blood"
3rd Company Captain - Alexis Shimeon - "Martyrs of Mankind"
4th Company Captain - Aelia Damiel - "Angels of Fire"
5th Company Captain - Ariko Hikouken - "Bloodied Guard"
6th Company Captain -Yumi Karyudo - "Ashes of the Phoenix"

DNA fused into all 19 gene seed organs during initial growth and incubation stages in an attempt to use the -EXCOMMUNICATED- Primarch to erase the black rage from their own geneseed. In what can only be considered a miracle of medicine, the secondary heart, the Biscopia, the Larraman’s Organ and one of two progenoid glands successfully integrated the -EXCOMMUNICATED- Primarch’s DNA with that of Sanguinius’ DNA used within the gene-seed organs. The other organs rejected the DNA and subsequently died. No attempts at re-creating this process were successful. Too many attempts led to the near extinction of the Saber's betcher’s gland. As a result, this gland is omitted from the gene-seed implantation process. The -EXCOMMUNICATED- Primarch's DNA, along with unsuccessful gene-seed tests to eliminate the Red Thirst allowed the gene seed to be implanted into female marines, though the process is more arduous for females since their physiology differs slightly from Male marines. Since the gene seed is still over 50% male female marines have a longer implantation process and require far more training, nearly double that of a male marine, however they have a higher tolerance for pain and can easily swing in and out of a red thirst mental state making them more ferocious than male counterparts on many occasions.

Phoenix Sabers still succumb to the red thirst. Despite an integration with -EXCOMMUNICATED- DNA, Sabers still part take in the Sanguine ritual and have no gene seed alterations to any of the additional organs to the brain, however due to the mental exercises created by the -EXCOMMUNICATED-, Sabers have a stronger will than their founding battle brothers against it, but it is far from infallible. If the mentality of a fellow battle brother goes untrained, he will lose all sanity on the battlefield and instantly succumb to the black rage and die on the battlefield. As a result the Phoenix Sabers chapter does not have a death company. Because of the mental exercises, brothers of the Phoenix’ psychic abilities increase at a rate faster than other Space Marine Chapters, however because of their need to hold back the red thirst and black rage these Marines very rarely have the ability to use their power for anything else, but to keep a hold on their genetic flaw. Each Phoenix brother keeps another brother’s mental stability in check, creating deeper bond and harmony between each of the brothers of the Phoenix. Due to this, the Phoenix Sabers only have two librarians and a single Chief Librarian.

PHOENIX SABERS SPACE MARINE: 4TH COMPANY DESIGNATION. "ANGELS OF FIRE"
The Phoenix Sabers 4th company consists entirely of female space marines. Shortly after the Chapter's founding the Phoenix Sabers fell quickly on hard times. Declared renegades by the Imperium and enemies with all others, the Phoenix Sabers quickly found themselves in battle after battle between both the Imperium's hunters, Space Marine chapters intent on purging the "heretic" as well as Xeno scum and the terrors of the warp itself. 100 years erecting a fortress on Naentis, the Inquisition scoured the planet, diminishing the Chapter's numbers to less than 100. The Chapter was desperate to replenish lost numbers and took male humans who would pass initiation rights, but word of the Inquisition spread further and further of the Phoenix Saber's status as heretics and numbers from became slim.

Desperate beyond all measure, first chief Apothecary Althair Yukio, began tampering with the -EXCOMMUNICATED- Primarch's DNA and it's integration with the DNA of Sanguinius in an attempt to expand the scope of the gene-seed to be implanted into female humans. After the medical miracle of the DNA integration between the two Primarchs, Apothecary Yukio began implantation experiments on female subjects.

After years of arduous testing and catastrophic failures, Sister Jocelyn Adrasteia became the first Adeptus Astartes to be born of a Primarch hybrid DNA. As recruitment continued, Sister Adrasteia, joined with other Adeptus Astartes Sisters proved to fight furiously and effectively on the battlefield. Sister Adrasteia quickly rose to the rank of Captain, now presiding over approximately 100 battle brothers and sisters. Exceptional female Astartes continued to stand out against the chapter.

It was later discovered that a gene-mutation had occurred increasing battlefield aggression in approximately every 1 in 7 female Astartes. Fearing the Black Rage, all female Astartes who displayed this trait were placed into a separate company. Ultimately these claims proved to be false and after additional tests and adjustment to the female implantation process in an additional 50 years the process was perfected and now only effected 1 in 12 female Astartes.

As the Phoenix Sabers slowly regained their strength, the iron fisted-4th company has defended the chapter from the Inquisition and it's allies almost single handed, being almost as revered as the veteran 1st company. Any female marines inducted into this company consider it a great honour.

Severed from the resources of the Imperium, the Phoenix Sabers have to rely completely on themselves for their own technical abilities and knowledge stores. Many tenants and doctrines were lost in the commandeering of the Legendary Cuirass, as such their librarium is quite small, many doctrines of their organization and system is lost, having to been rebuilt from either memories or re-created completely from scratch. As a result, the entire Phoenix Sabers’ fleet has become something of a democratic commonwealth, with it’s own set of laws etc.

With technology knowledge in short supply, the techmarines and chapter armourers take great pains to reverse-engineer all weapons and tech as they possibly can in order to maintain par with the Imperium. In some cases they surpass the Imperium slightly and fall short in others. Their plasma weapons, as an example, burn hotter and are sometimes more unstable than the Imperium’s plasma weapons. On the flipside, melta weapons are more accurate and in often cases more devastating than that of the Imperium’s. Additionally as a blood Angel’s successor, the Phoenix Sabers have access to the Blood Angel’s modifications originally taken from Baal, such as Baal predators, Stormraven gunships and flight information to deep strike Land raiders. However, due to a lack of resources and tanks, Phoenix Sabers generally field less armour. Compensation is reflected in their combat tactics.

Kusanagi Adustum - Literal meaning Sword of the burning heavens, was originally a blade was made during the Horus Heresy modeled after Sanguinius’ own Blade Encarmine. It said to be the blade of one of the lost Primarchs during Horus Heresy. After the Heresy, it was lost in the warp to the forces of Chaos. It was recovered five thousand years later during the Age of Apostasy, barely recognizable after 5 millennia of use the blade itself almost in ruins was repaired and re-forged into it’s current form and given it’s current name. It was given to the Blood Angels, only to be found that none could use it as more than a simple combat blade. Thought to be the taint of Chaos, the blade was locked away in a sacred archive on Terra with other documents and relics from the Horus Heresy. During his pilgrimage Nero Ignatius discovered the lost archive and obtained the blade along with his documents written by Sanguinius himself. The blade was used during Nero Ignatius’ escape from Terra where it’s power was used for the first time in nearly six thousand years, activated by reading the combination of the -EXCOMMUNICATED- Primarch’s and the DNA of Sanguinius within. Since then, it has been said that the Kusanagi chooses the Chapter Master, one who follow’s the strongest ideals of the Emperor and Sanguinius, for not every Chapter Master candidate was able to wield the blade. The Kusanagi Adustum has since been passed to each succession of Chapter Masters to lead them to truth and the resurrection of a free and peaceful mankind.

Ashbel - This blade was forged by the Phoenix Primarch himself and buried in the ground of a shrine world before the Phoenix Saber's separation from the Imperium. A shrine was built around the blade of the Primarch to commemorate his duel with the Daemon Prince, which saved the planet. It responds only to the Phoenix Saber's Chapter Master or the Phoenix Primarch himself. The blade burns constantly with a righteous flame and is kept to be openly viewed in the great hall of the Legendary Cuirass MKIII. After the Blood Angels chased the World Eaters back into the warp on the day the Phoenix Primarch appeared, the Phoenix Primarch forged and purified this blade from the swords and armour of fallen battle brothers. He imbued it with his own power and lost technology alike to create a powerful blade representing the bond and the power of the Blood Angels who fought and died on their blood quest and for the future they wished to one day see.
