i think that people like the GW LoTR range for their own "D&D" games. that or the artisans use them since they are so detailed.

Only a fraction of what they make with 40k and Fantasy, but yes.. they still make profit on what they spend on LotR... Which, when you consider there's barely any new models etc for ever... its probably just the licence fees for them.

That said, when The Hobbit finally arrives, they will probably see a mini-boom again... this time in 10 years though? LotR won't be on the shelves anymore and will be relegated to specialist Game status.

I used to play occasionally and have most of the models stored away somewhere, lost interest though when GW stopped making new models and started pumping out things which didn't seem to fit in with Tolkien at all and at this point I stopped.

Will be nice to see what happens with The Hobbit coming next year though.

I think much earlier in its lifespan it made them a lot of money, but it eventually dried out - there's only so many unit types and fluff they can do using the licence. I didn't like the transition from skirmish game to War of the Ring since I thought thats what made me play it instead of 40k.

Black Templars 3rd/4th
Necrons 5th

The LotR models are beautiful, some of the best that GW does- when I was a staffer I sold a lot of LotR to people just looking to paint models rather then play with them. There were also some really dedicated LotR players, several of which had every model in the entire range... something that (almost) no one would ever dream of doing for 40k/WFB.

War of the ring is a fun game, and if I didnt play WFB I would think of getting into it, but I wouldnt bother with LotR, it just takes too long and doesnt seem to be as rich as the other games. I was given a small easterling army by a friend and I learnt the rules as part of my job... and I still wont play it.

Well at my counrty at least(Greece) we give more importance to Lotr.At ne wyear eve they made a search and found that 87% players(2600000) play only Lotr, around 10% players play both Warhammer and Lotr(around 300000) and 3%(around 100000) play only warhammer.TheLotr minis at our stores here are selling like crazy. So as Workshop sells the minis to our stores(called Fantasy shop) they have at least a good buyer.

And so i shall come. The last "unwanted" necron lord.

They must be making moeny as Im pretty sure they wouldnt renew the license if they were losing money. Fingers crossed with the hobbit film coming out a whole new group of models, which will probably create another surge in the Lotr range.
