Default Mayhaps starting LoTR

So, I was looking a starting a LoTR army. The majority of the people in my store play them, and with the new releases they are back in the forelight and getting played again. Read the books years ago as a tyke when my english professor great-aunt coerced me into it and liked them a lot. I watched the movies (2000 series) down the road and liked them until they killed the story.... But you don't care.

So I played a few games and read the sourcebooks and rules. Looking at starting one of these armies (for mostly aestetic, but maybe some gameplay) reasons:

Kingdoms of Men - Built around warriors/rangers of gondor with some fountain court guard. Maybe ally in some rohan or dol armoth or an ent. Or take minas tiras knights. Maybe a

Harad - Built around haradrim with hasharim, watchers or karna, the abrakhan guard, maybe a golden king or serpent lord. Maybe some riders too.

Mordor - Black numenoreans and morghul knights. A ringwraith or two to lead the army. Maybe get a fell beast or ally in a cave drake/dragon/terror of arnor/mini-balrog. Trying out stuff like castellans and shades maybe too - and might even ally the numenoreans in from the fallen realms to get fight 5.

So this is what I was looking at getting. What would be the best or easiest to learn? Or am I missing seriously great units I shouldn't?

Say if you went for Men of Middle Earth: I.E Men of Gondor, you can't go far wrong with some Warriors of Minas Tirith....

And if you wanted Dol Amroth as Allies, Swan Knights are epic on foot as well as mounted, and don't forget Prince Imrihil, he is amazing on Horseback and the rule for him are disgusting, that is my favourite combo, saying that.... i need the new book so am unsure on cost points wise

Thanks. I was talking about the mounted knights, they look really awesome and seem to beat face. Yeah. I mean to say I'd get some warriors or minas tirith but just said warriors.

It seems like gondor at least focuses more on a higher defense and cheapish troops, even their elites have fight 4, if I remember right.

When you say new book, do you mean sourcebook or hobbit rulebook?

source book i believe, i have gondor in flames which i think has been updated/replaced?

Fight value 4 for average troops is pretty good, Knights of minas tirith are damn good, but swan knights are soo much better on the charge (plus they look nicer)

I thought gondorian warriors were fight 3/5?

Swan knights do look boss.

as i said i had the old book, can't find the damn thing to check, plus there's a new one out, so you are proabably knight ;)

Swan are BOSS, end of discussion, i would put money on it as being the best cavalry unit in the game (Imrahil added in too, they are devastating)

One of those lucky times when you get a great model that doesn't have to sit on the shelf.

Thanks for the advice there - but have you played with/against other armies? Any cool combos out there besides those stupid pike uruk?

Yes, we all know the hate that Uruk Pikemen bring to the table :/

I have seen a somewhat unpredictable, but brilliant Army if used right.... it composed of a Balrog, and LOTS AND LOTS of Moria Goblins. My frined in partivular who used this tactic, he just swarmed the enemy with Goblin's, and his Balrog just strolled through skipping and dancing, and cleaved his way through captains/characters alike, and i heard he has added a watcher in the dark as well... very niced themed army there...

Some of the Fifedoms can be fun, the Dol Amroth crew are pretty cool, pricey though points and ££ wise, everything is blistered apart from the swan knights on horseback (very nice and crisp looking army there)

The clansmen look great, 2h Weapons and wearing Kilts, what isn't there to like?

i haven't collected Orc's, but Standard Mrodor orcs are fun to play against, look nasty, but Morannon Orc's are better and they look harder. But what is even more disgusting is the black guard of Barad Dur, they're fight value 5 is nothing to be sniffed at, and they are the Elite of the Elite, very nasty to fight against, i like to shoot them with everything i have in my disposal (incase of Gondor, for every trebuchet i take i take 2 Avenger Bolt throwers ;) )

I've started my new Gondor Army now, i bought the warriors of Minas Tirith and commanders set, i'll get them cleaned up and i am starting a blog here to help try gather new interest, i'll be putting up new pictures as often as i can.

Plus for Reference is anyone is interested, i am going with the classic polished mithril look, and going or a Deep Purple cloak underneath etc...
